$1,000 For You + $1,000 For Him GIVEAWAY!

1 in 9 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer during his lifetime. Chances are you might know and love someone who has had or will get a prostate cancer diagnosis. Prostate cancer is the SECOND leading cause of cancer death among men. I had no idea.

So, why are we talking to you, the “prostateless”, about this cancer?

If you’re anything like me, you’re the one making everyone’s doctors appointments, doing the late night WebMD Google searches, taking care of your kids, your husband and even harassing your parents about their health. True confession? I had to BET my dad $500 that he needed knee replacements. I’m the only one who got him to the doctor. But I lost . . . he actually needed BOTH of his HIPS replaced! But a good daughter puts it all on the line right? (We called the bet a draw btw . . .)

Turns out the “best long-term care insurance in our country is a conscientious daughter” proved by a recent healthcare study by a bunch of Stanford University Fellows (more here). You’re welcome dad!

So What If I Know Someone Who Gets Diagnosed With Prostate Cancer?

Here’s the cool thing. The Prolaris Test is a prostate cancer test that provides a new measure of the aggressiveness of an individual’s prostate cancer. Getting a “Prolaris Score” will give both the patient and the physician additional information about the cancer that no other test can. That impacts the kind of treatment that person you love will get as well as the side effects and outcomes. It’s such valuable information to have.  So if you know someone with a recent diagnosis point them to Prolaris.com. They can ask their doctor about it and odds are their insurance covers it.

$1,000 For You + $1,000 For Him

Mom, you have so many titles, perhaps the most important of which is CMO. Chief Medical Officer of your household. You’re stocking the medicine cabinet, dragging out the humidifier, reminding kids “don’t scratch that”, throwing a quick multivitamin at anyone you can, and harassing your loved ones to get to the doctor. But sometimes it takes a bribe. So we’re bribing BOTH OF YOU. You and the man in your life—we’ve got a $2,000 Grand Prize up for grabs. $1000 for you, and $1000 for that man that you keep having to remind to be mindful of his health.

To enter to win, just submit his email address and yours.

You’ll be entered to win. He’ll receive three short emails. (We promise, only three.) These emails will include information and reminders to help him stay on top of his prostate health.

To sweeten the deal, we have a whole bundle of prizes for runners up including a Traeger Grill (Pro Series 34 Pellet Grill), Yeti Tundra Haul Cooler, and five winners will each get a $100 Amazon.com gift card.

Winners will be selected using Random.org so get going! We’ve even included a few ways for you to get extra entries!

HOW TO ENTER:

In the first entry field you’ll leave YOUR e-mail address and in the second entry field you’ll enter HIS (your husband, your dad, your brother, your best friend’s) e-mail address. Once you’ve done that you will unlock bonus entry options to improve your odds!

9 Things You Need To Do With Your Lady Friends {Like YESTERDAY}

Girls Night Out Ideas

This post is for all you mamas looking for some solid girls night out ideas, or those that just need a quick kick in the pants to make it all happen.

Listen, maybe you’re all ready good at these things. Taking all the time you need for yourself, getting out for some ME time, taking care of YOU. For those of us lost in the motherhood hustle, here are some of the best ways to spend time with your lady friends!

One of the key components — it’s time to start saying YES.

As moms, I think we’ve gotten used to saying NO all day long.  We end up saying NO to ourselves inordinately as well. Here’s your friendly reminder of things to SAY YES to.

Potluck

Do I sound like my mother? Who does a “potluck” anymore. Me and my friends. And it’s the best (especially if you have friends who can cook  . . . or friends who know where to buy the good foods that they can’t cook).  We do an annual “Friendsgiving”, birthday dinners, or random get togethers just because.

Dance The Night Away

For me, the opportunity might present itself like a rare eclipse — but when it does — YOU MUST DANCE! Don’t sit it out, hit the dance floor and request all of the best 80’s and 90’s songs to get your feet moving.

Will you wake up feeling like you are 120? Probably. After my most recent dancecapade in Whistler Canada, I woke up with sore knees, hips, neck and back. Ibuprofen was in order (and a trip to the spa was probably justified too).

Hit Up A Concert

I just reignited my concert going a couple of years ago and kicked things off with an epic Coldplay concert. I’d forgotten how amazing concerts are. They do something for the soul and there’s scientific proof it will make you live longer

Plan in advance for your favorite bands or simply decide to say YES next time someone has an extra ticket. My new philosophy on concerts is to just say YES.

Get Out Of Town

Ever been to Disneyland with your girlfriends? No kids? It’s life changing.

Whether it’s Disneyland, an epic road trip, a work trip turned weekend getaway or a jaunt to a hotel downtown with your gal pals to get away for just a night, some vacation time with your girl besties is just what the doctor ordered!

Eat All The Things

Let’s be honest, it’s easier to hit up all the best restaurants WHEN YOU ONLY HAVE TO PAY FOR YOURSELF. And really, we’re never going to drag our kids to those places. That foodie bucket list you’ve got should be shared {and executed promptly} with your besties.

Say Yes To Questionable Spa Treatments And Experiences

I mean, use your best judgement right? But some of the best {and funniest} spa experiences with friends have been the most random things we’ve done.

On a recent work trip turned girlfriend getaway we ended up in Jamaica at an incredible spa. They had a hydro treatment that required us to move through all sorts of different experiences including jumping in to an ice cold pool {screaming our guts out}.

That Chinese massage parlor on a random corner in Portland was the best spur of the moment decision I’ve ever made.

The weird float spa pods that I talked everyone into were magical.

That one time I talked my friend into doing some sort of colon cleanse because all of the other spa appointments were too booked was the most epic comedy recorded in history. It’s too messy to discus here, but let it be know that I will laugh until I cry every time she retells the story.

Take Up A Sport

Let’s be age and ability appropriate. You might still be ready to rock an indoor soccer team or maybe it’s a bowling league. Tennis or golf anyone? Swimming or yoga? Racquetball? There is something out there for EVERYONE and time making your body move is time well spent. It’s even more tolerable with friends.

Play Games

I mean, choose your speed. Your crew might be perfect for Bunko or a simple card game . . . OR Cards Against Humanity might be more your speed (only to be played when your children are 1,000 miles away from ear shot).  This game is rated R for Rad {and adult language and inappropriateness}.

A Tuesday Afternoon Movie

Yep. You’re right. The theatre will likely be filled with the iridescent swoops of the glowing grey hair of the retired community. And you. You should be there too.

Grab a babysitter, get your kids to school, take the afternoon off of work, grab your friends and PLAY HOOKIE! Catch a cheap movie and grab some good lunch. It’s amazing.

BTW This Post Is Brought To You By One Of The Best Ladyship’s Out There

Melissa and Maya.

They are the FUNNEST combination to watch together on screen. Melissa McCarthy’s new movie “Life of the Party” hits theatres this weekend and there is plenty of role modeling for what good friends do for each other. Things like play raquetball together, represent each other in legal situations, throw the perfect one liners at your ex, and encouraging you to spread your wings and fly (right back to college).

Here’s the thing. I got super lucky and was able to attend the premier of Life of the Party. I got inches of make up applied to my face, curls in my hair, and hit the red carpet in Auburn Alabama with loads of college kids from Auburn University (Go War Eagles)!

Look up there! There’s Melissa McCarthy and Julie Bowen, with a bunch of other amazing bloggers and lady friends. Melissa told me she liked me dress, so I guess we’re pretty much best friends.

My only regret is that I didn’t have all of my lady friends with me. We would have died laughing together! Instead, I was dying laughing next to @FunnyAsianDude, one of the guys IN the movie — who was WONDERFUL but probably a little freaked out because I almost punched him several times as I was dying laughing (and clearly punch people when that happens to me).

I saved photos of all the action on our Instagram page @TodaysMama — just look at our highlighted stories and you’ll see “Life of the Party” click through and you’ll see shots from the red carpet, the stars, the after party, the whole thing! {I’ll try to embed the video here but Instagram is being feisty and it won’t let me download it!}

Life of the Party is definitely the next Tuesday afternoon movie or Friday night out with your ladies that you need to schedule ASAP. {And if you are catching this late, it’s a great movie to pair with your potluck}! No excuses, get out there and have a girls night!

Bonus! Check out this fun interview with Melissa and Maya over on the LA Times! I heart them.

Dry Hair Driving You Nuts? Add This To Your Routine

Full Disclosure: I live in one of the driest climates in the United States! I’m in Utah and we literally rank #2 driest climate.  Yes, we even beat Arizona.

As you can guess, my skin and hair are DRY.  Well, I just found something new that solves the hair problem.

The trick? Try switching out your hair dryer.

Confession. I used a little blue hair dryer for literally 20 years! From the time I was 18, until I was 38! It was held together with electrical tape in it’s last days.

I upgraded and bought a fancy hair dryer. Like the $150 kind. Indeed it dries my hair faster (it’s like unto being in a wind tunnel) but it has definitely dried my hair out a bit and I’ve got a few complaints. The buttons on the handle are horribly designed so that when I hold the handle I’m constantly accidentally turning it off or changing the heat. My girls complain that it burns their head, and it typically leaves me with a bunch of tangles. It’s always falling off the counter, I take some responsibility for that – but it still drives me nuts. But it does dry my hair fast.

Panasonic reached out and asked us to review their “Nanoe™ Moisture Infusion Hair Dryer” with promises of increased moisture and shine. Since I’m a little underwhelmed with my current hair dryer I was game!

Could a hair dryer really ADD moisture to my hair?

We Tried It: Our Panasonic Nanoe Hair Dryer Review

My kids and I tried the Panasonic hair dryer out (my husband has no hair, he’s disqualified). We’ve all got different hair types:

  • Me = Thick + On The Dry Side
  • 9-Year-Old = Fine (Thin) + Rats Nest
  • 14-Year-Old Girl = Fine (But Lots of Hair) + Damaged/Dry From Some Ombre Highlights
  • 15-Year-Old Boy = Fine + Bleached + Uses Lots of Product

My Review

I’ve got LOADS of hair. The weather in Utah is hard on my hair and skin.  Because it’s so dry here my hair can get really staticky (which is my biggest complaint about the dry weather). I use a leave in conditioner to help with that and even then my hair is still a bit dry.

This dryer totally tamed my hair. I was skeptical that a dryer could actually add moisture BUT when I was finished my hair definitely softer and the texture was more smooth (and that was WITHOUT using the leave in conditioner).

It did take a bit more time to dry than my wind tunnel machine hair dryer — but the difference is definitely obvious. My guess is that over time I would have LESS split ends by using this hair dryer.

9-Year-Old Girl

Her hair is fine and SO tangly in the morning. We used the hair dryer this morning before school and her hair was smooth and felt thicker. It really added volume. I also noticed that by day 2 her hair still looked great.  It still felt thicker and continued to behave a whole lot better.

I’ve got ZERO usable sound bites from her, because let’s all be real . . . the 9-year-old could care less about the hair dryer (or what her hair looks like). Those were the days!

14-Year-Old Girl

She’s due for a haircut. Her hair has grown to insane lengths, she “ombred” the ends of her hair this year, and she’s got some crazy new growth coming in all over her head. Did that happen to you in middle school?!? It’s crazy!

Here’s what she said:

“MOM! Look at my hair! This dryer is LIT! My hair is way softer, my flyaways (shorter new growth) are not sticking up (this was revolutionary), it’s like I’m having a good hair day! It took a little longer to dry but it’s worth it.”

15-Year-Old Boy

OK, so my son then my son felt left out. He literally said “Yo! How does that blow dryer work?”

He regularly uses a hair dryer too. Boys these days . . . they need volume and product to keep their hair looking it’s best! He, in true teenage boy style, recently bleached his hair to a yellow / platinum. He and 10 of his buddies look just like 1994.

He felt like his hair was softer and held on to his product better.

The Verdict?

The best part is that I got my kids feedback BEFORE they even knew we were reviewing this product online. They thought that I had just brought home a new hair dryer.

Bottom line:

Better design than my $150 dryer (the buttons are in the right place, it sits perfectly on the counter top). Temperature control was perfect – my biggest critics (my girls) were not getting after me about the heat.

Did it really add moisture to our hair? YES! And it made a visible difference with the first use and the difference sticks.

Here’s How It Works

How does the Nanoe™ technology work, you might ask? Here’s what Panasonic has to say:

It draws naturally occurring ions present in the air and breaks them down into significantly smaller particles that are then combined and held together by water molecules. These new moisture-rich nanoe hair dryer particles—with nearly 1,000 times more moisture than regular ions—are infused into the hair while styling. In essence, the nanoe Hair Dryer helps protect and beautify your hair by taking moisture that’s outside and putting it on the inside. The result = smoother, shinier and stronger hair.

Would I Buy It?

Yep. Cheaper than my other dryer, no complaints on design or function, and YES it really does add moisture to your hair (that sticks)!

The Easiest Way To Limit Screen Time {We’ve found it!}

One of the biggest issues facing parents today is how to limit screen time to healthy, constructive levels. Ever feel like monitoring your kids screen time is a full time job? You feel like a police officer instead of a guidance counselor? It’s can feel overwhelming, time consuming and frustrating. We’ve found a tool to make it easier.

The best tool to limit screen time

Don’t get me wrong. No tool can fix the screen time problem at your house without your participation. As parents we’ve got to tow the line, model the behavior, and have ONGOING talks with our kids about building healthy habits. I wrote a little bit about the guiding principles at our house here:

3 Screen Time Rules My Kids Actually Thanked Me For

The reality is, we can talk all we want about not eating too many cookies, and if we fill all of the cupboards of our house with cookies, avoiding those cookies is going to be a whole lot harder.

“By designing for laziness, you can stop or reduce a behavior. For example, put bad snacks in garage on shelf that requires a ladder.”

— BJ Fogg

So let’s do a little better. Let’s create digital environments that limit screen time to healthy levels and leave us all happier.

Designing our physical and digital environments to set us all up for success is KEY! We want our kids to understand “the why” in all of this, and then back them up by setting them up for success . . . guard rails to keep them safe and help them establish good screen time habits while we’ve still got them under our roof.

One of the tools we’ve found that is our very favorite is Circle. It simply takes me out of the role of police officer and let’s me stick with the role of guidance counselor {most of the time}.  Consider Circle your digital assistant screen time manager.

Our Favorite Tool To Limit Screen Time

Drum roll please . . . Circle!

There are 2 products: Circle Home and Circle Go

What’s the difference? We’ll break it down.  Here’s our Circle With Disney Review:

Circle Home

Circle Home pairs wirelessly with your home Wi-Fi and allows you to manage every device on your network. Using the Circle app, families can create unique profiles for each family member. From here, kids will have a connected experience that is designed just for them.”

The Circle Home is basically your parental control router (that thing that manages your home network).

That means as a parent I can:

  • Set time limits both on the device and on individual apps and platforms
  • Assign a bedtime
  • Filter the bad stuff
  • Create rewards and incentives
  • Hit pause on the internet
  • Set “offtime” or screen free hours
  • Track and monitor usage {Like, I can see exactly where my kids are spending time online broken down by app, platform and website}

Even better? I can tweak these settings for every person in our home. My 9 year old has her own profile and my 15 year old has his own profile. Different kids, different settings — ONE place to manage it {insert praise hands}!

Basically, Circle combines the best features of the apps and services we’ve tried in the past, all in one place.

There was once a drawback . . . in the past Circle really only worked inside my home, when my kids were within the bounds of my wireless router. Now that’s changed. Enter Circle Go!

Circle Go

Circle Go does all that stuff I just outlined above, but now it extends beyond the walls (and wireless network) of my house. Yep – that means that while my kids are hanging out with their friends on a Friday night all those same guard rails are in place {more praise hands}! We think it’s the best parental control app for iPhone and Android.

“Apps are the new Internet, and managing them wherever your kid goes is a must for parents. Filters and Time Limits apply anywhere and everywhere, even for apps like Snapchat, Instagram, and YouTube.”

The Circle App connects to both Circle Home and Circle Go and you manage everything from there.

FAQ

What devices can connect with Circle / Circle Go?

iOS and Android! You can get a full list HERE

How much does it cost?

A Circle Home is a one time cost of $99 and Circle Go is $4.99 / month for up to 10 devices.  Worth it? YES.

How hard is it to install?

Honestly, so much easier than most of the parental control apps I’ve tried to set up to limit screen time and manage our devices. Set up is simple and the design of the app is intuitive. A degree in tech ninja NOT required.

Bottom Line

I’m deeply involved in my kids tech habits. I’ve got to be. But I also don’t like feeling like a one woman show, personal screen time tracker, internet timer, living breathing parental control app. Circle simply sets the environment on all the devices to make making good choices easier.

You’ll still have work to do, you’ve still got to talk to your kids about technology (a lot), you’ve still got to put your phone down yourself, BUT you’ve got help.

Disclosure

This post is sponsored by Circle with Disney. But guess what? We pitched them – not the other way around.  Our readers are constantly asking how we limit screen time in our homes. We reached out to Circle because they are legitimately our favorite parental controls, screen time management tool out there and we wanted to share.

‘I Feel Pretty’ Movie Review

For those of you saying “I mean I hear it’s good and seems to have a solid message, but it’s Amy Schumer, would you take your daughter?”

This review is for you.

Here’s the deal — I’d say I have a moderate threshold for inappropriateness, but in years past I’ve had a mixed relationship with Amy Schumer. Sometimes she has me laughing out loud, sometimes she has me contorting my face and saying EW! Like when I was reading “The Girl With The Lower Back Tattoo” on a long flight and I’d literally make a disgusted face and then turn and look around the plane as if fellow passengers were reading over my shoulder. And then I’d be laughing again a few minutes later.

We’ve Netflixed a few Amy Schumer movies that we’ve ultimately turned off (and note to self, I was warned, they were rated R, I’ve got no excuse).

Having said that — I went into “I Feel Pretty” hoping it was great but expecting that the humor would go a little too far leaving me disappointed (and unable to share what was hopefully an inspiring message with my 14-year-old girl). I was wrong and happily surprised.

To be clear, the movie is PG-13 {you can check out the IMDB parents guide here}. There’s some language, drinking, and the parents guide calls out that the movie makes mention of the word “vagina”.  All things we’ve comfortably talked about at our house.

See More: Common Sense Media Review

The overall message shines, and this group {of mostly Mormon moms might I add}  give the movie 2 thumbs up and have gone back with daughters in tow. I’m taking my girl next week and excited for a solid girls night followed by some good conversations.

Here’s what the rest of our crew had to say about ‘I Feel Pretty’:

“My teenagers loved LOVED it! All of my teenage nieces and my daughters went on Friday. They asked for baguette (bagetti) with dinner last night. My daughter Abby loved the body positivity. She keeps talking about how nice it was to see Amy Schumer in a role that wasn’t vulgar.”

— Wendy

“I laughed out loud, a lot. It reminded me of the fun rom coms I grew up on!”

— Carina

“I thought it was really funny. I don’t always like Amy Schumer — but I laughed out loud many times. It has a great message and I can’t wait to take my teen!”

— Lindsey

“I laughed hard! A better version of a rom com!”

— Kalli

We weren’t the only ones in the theatre laughing, the whole place was cracking up. I might have even shed a tear a time or two.

Bottom line?  We could all learn a thing or two from “I Feel Pretty”. Time well spent!

{P.S. Check out her recent interview with Oprah on the Super Soul Podcast! It was fantastic!}

Facebook Says They “May” Collect Data From Your Calls and Texts. Here’s How To Turn It Off

3 Facebook Settings You Need To Review TODAY

There’s been a lot of noise over the past few weeks about Facebook, the Russians, and YOUR personal privacy. {Read up HERE}

If you’re sticking around, it’s time for a little house cleaning.

Let’s start with Facebook’s access to your calls, texts, and contacts:

Chances are that when you set up Facebook Messenger you may have clicked a button that would allow you to “text anyone in your phone”. By activating that feature, you gave access to Facebook to “continuously upload info about your contacts like phone numbers and nicknames, and your call and text history”.  (via Facebook Newsroom)

Facebook defended itself by explaining that:

“People have to expressly agree to use” the opt-in feature for importing their contacts on Messenger or Facebook Lite to allow Facebook to collect the cell phone data, but Sunday’s statement is the first time the social media company actually spelled out that practice in clear terms for users. (via Time Magazine)

Here’s how to turn it off in Facebook Messenger:

Android:

  1. From Home, tap your profile picture in the top right corner
  2. Tap People
  3. Synced Contacts to turn this setting on or off

iPhone or iPad:

  1. From Home, tap your profile picture in the top left corner
  2. Tap People
  3. Tap Synced Contacts to turn this setting on or off

Time To Review The Apps That Have Access To Your Facebook Profile (And Your Friends!)

Ever taken a quiz to find out which Disney Princess you are? (Or any other crazy personality test etc.)

Here’s where you can see all of those Apps and Services that you may have inadvertently opened the door to!

Go to your personal profile page on Facebook:

  1. Click on the dropdown menu in the upper right hand corner of your page
  2. Click on Settings
  3. Click on Apps
  4. Review the list of apps and websites you’ve given access to your Facebook profile.
  5. To see what access each app has or to edit the settings on a specific app click on the light grey pencil icon to the right of the app
  6. To delete apps or revoke access tap or click on the light grey “x” to the right of the app

Next Up: Let’s Look At Your “Ads” Settings

Why does this one matter? Here’s where Facebook shows you SOME of the data they’ve tied to you and how they target ads to you.

  1. Click on the dropdown menu in the upper right hand corner of your personal profile page
  2. Click on Settings
  3. Click on Ads

You’ll see:

Click on each section. See how Facebook has been targeting and tracking you so far. The data they had tied to my personal profile was highly inaccurate. They had tied grocery stores to me outside of my state, retail stores that I would never shop at, and interests that were completely off base (listing interests like “Gambling” and “Alcohol” for the Mormon girl who’s never had a drink).

Review each section and clean it up. You can delete the information they have tied to you, hide ad topics, and limit how your ads are served to you.

Big surprise? I deleted most everything and limited access as much as possible. You may not mind the data that Facebook has tied to you and how they are serving your ads — but you’d still benefit by doing a good review of this page and the info they have stored there.

What Next?

If you want to dig a little deeper, review your personal “About Page” and the details you’ve listed there. Take a look at the places you’ve “Checked In” on Facebook. Review all of the Movies, TV Shows, Books, Likes, Events You’ve Attended etc. Save that one for an afternoon when you’ve got time to kill!

This is not an exhaustive list of all the ways that Facebook manipulates your experience within the platform. We haven’t even touched on how it’s built to be addictive, how studies show that it’s not unhappy people that are using social media but that it’s social media that’s MAKING PEOPLE UNHAPPY, and all the ways we’ve given our privacy away to these platforms.

We’re working on some great resources for families that we’ll be releasing in the coming months. In the meantime, leave us a comment and tell us what we’ve missed and how you are “cleaning house” when it comes to technology.
