Both of my kids are very picky, so I do my best to find healthy foods to pack for their lunch. My daughter is pretty easy and loves when I add cute notes or draw on her food with edible markers.

Finding creative school lunch ideas for my middle school aged son, who is the most picky, is really challenging. Here are a few school lunch ideas I have packed for him. They might not be the healthiest ideas around, but it’s a start to get him to try SOME healthy things.

Printable Days of the Week Closet Tags

I love this idea for Days of the Week Closet Tags that I came up with to help keep my kids organized and ready for school. It’s been a lifesaver! No more stressful mornings and my kids learned their days of the weeks at a very young age.

Getting organized for back to school and ready for my kid’s daily routines is a huge help for a busy mom like me. To make mornings much easier, we chose clothes for each day of the week and hung them on a low closet rack for my kids to reach. Then I designed some cute Days of the Week Tags to hang on each outfit’s hanger. The Days of the Week Closet Tags have the day of the week written out and a giant letter for kids not old enough to read.

How the Days of the Week Closet Tags Work

To help you visualize how these tags work, I’m sharing a photo of my son’s closet from when he was in kindergarten. We still do this and he is now going into the 5th grade!

The night before school, he takes the designated outfit off of the hangers and lays it on the floor by his door. This way he won’t forget to get dressed before coming downstairs. We usually make silly poses with the clothes and that makes it even more fun!

These Days of the Week Closet Tags are also perfect for my daughter, because she can go a little crazy on the layering! This causes much less decision making stress in the morning! I designed the pastel pinks and purple Days of the Week tags for her closet.

No Bake Chocolate Protein Bars

Easy homemade chocolate protein bars are a perfect healthy snack. This gluten free recipe packed with protein and calcium has the taste you love without the guilt!

  • 2 Dates (pitted)
  • 1/2 cup Walnuts
  • 1/2 cup Gluten Free Oatmeal
  • 1 1/2 cup Cashew Meal
  • 2 tablespoons Organic Maple Syrup
  • 1 3/4 cup Dark Chocolate Chips
  • pinch of salt
  1. In a food processor, mix the dates, walnuts, oatmeal and cashew meal until ground together.
  2. Add maple syrup, salt and mix until it forms a dough.
  3. Line a 9×9 pan with parchment paper.
  4. Pour the dough into the pan and smooth it out with a spatula or small rolling pin.
  5. Create a double boiler by bringing water to boil in a small pan and placing a heat-proof bowl that is slightly larger than the pan over it. Pour the chocolate chips into the bowl and stir until completely melted.
  6. Once the chocolate is melted, pour over the cookie layer in the pan.Slightly shift the pan back and forth on the counter. This will help you achieve a smooth chocolate layer.

  7. Place the pan in the refrigerator or freezer until completely hardened.
  8. Remove the protein bars by pulling on the sides of the parchment paper. Cut into squares or bars and serve.

Add more maple syrup for sweeter bars.

The Powerpuff Girls School Lunch | Sandwich Art

The Powerpuff Girls sandwiches are a cute superhero school lunch! Make sandwich art for kids that's full of sugar, spice, and everything nice.

I’m excited to share one of my most fun food creations to date… The Powerpuff Girls school lunches! Aren’t they the cutest superheroes? I created these fun sandwiches in partnership with Hulu to let you know that they are back! Hulu now is the only place to find the full classic animated series The Powerpuff Girls.

Now you can send some girl power to school with your kids, by making these cute sandwiches! It’s sandwich art that’s full of sugar, spice, and everything nice.

The Powerpuff Girls on Hulu

Hulu is THE streaming destination for the best of TV, and a great selection of films! Plus, you can stream almost anywhere, on any device, including gaming consoles, set-top boxes, tablets, mobile phones, and more. Visit Hulu.com to start your free trial.

About The Powerpuff Girls!

If you don’t remember the Cartoon Network’s original series, let me tell you a little about it. The Powerpuff Girls centers around three superheroes, Blossom, Bubbles, and Buttercup, whose missions in life alternate between going to school, fighting crime, winning at hopscotch and saving the world before bedtime.

Blossom is the confident and courageous leader of The Powerpuff Girls.

Bubbles is the second of The Powerpuff Girls known as “The Joy and the Laughter.”

The Powerpuff Girls sandwiches are a cute superhero school lunch! Make sandwich art for kids that's full of sugar, spice, and everything nice.

Buttercup is the third of The Powerpuff Girls known as “The Toughest Fighter.”

The Powerpuff Girls sandwiches are a cute superhero school lunch! Make sandwich art for kids that's full of sugar, spice, and everything nice.

I had so much fun making sandwiches from The Powerpuff Girls! Here’s how I did it…

What you’ll need to Make The Powerpuff Girls Sandwiches:

  • A large round cookie cutter (I used a thermos – it worked just as well as a cookie cutter)
  • bottle caps for cutting small candy into circles
  • Salt-Water Taffy
  • Mini OREO Cookies
  • Provolone Cheese (Bubble’s hair)
  • Cheddar Cheese (Blossom’s hair)
  • Sushi Sheets (Buttercup’s hair)
  • Olives (mouth)
  • Strawberries
  • 1 Red Fruit Roll-Up
  • wax paper

The Powerpuff Girls sandwiches are a cute superhero school lunch! Make sandwich art for kids that's full of sugar, spice, and everything nice.

The main challenge I faced when making The Powerpuff Girls sandwiches, was how to come up with a way to make their eyes. I was so happy with the way the taffy worked! I got a bag of taffy at my grocery store which had all of the colors I needed.

How to make eyes:

  1. Scrape the white filling out of a mini OREO.
  2. Find a white piece of taffy and roll it out thin with a rolling pin.
  3. Cut out a circle shape with a bottle cap. My taffy had red or black taffy in the white ones, but I just cut around the color.
  4. Do the same with a colorful piece of candy for the girl’s eye color. You can use a red fruit roll-up for the red eye.
  5. Now take a small piece of white taffy, roll it into a ball and flatten it out for the eyeball. Gently lay it on the Oreo wafer. Add some water on the back for it to stick.
  6. Add the OREO to the colorful round candy shape.
  7. Then roll out the white shape a little more with your rolling pin to make it larger than the colorful circle. Then add the rest of the eye onto the white circle. Set it aside on wax paper while you make the other eye.

Once you have the eyes finished, cut your bread into a circle, make your sandwich and add the eyes to the top.

Decorate the rest of the face with cheese or sushi sheets for the hair, then attach half of an olive for the mouth with a bit of cream cheese.

I used strawberries for Blossom’s bunny ears.

The Wild Life Parrot Fruit Snack

How to make a Healthy Parrot Fruit Snack for Kids! A simple treat for an after school snack or a birthday party. Fun food idea inspired by The Wild Life animated movie.

Today, we’re making a healthy fruit snack for kids that looks just like a parrot! I love coming up with fun food and party ideas for the latest movies, so was thrilled when the folks from The Wild Life asked me to create something cute for the new animated movie in theaters September 9th.

On a tiny exotic island, an outgoing parrot and his quirky animal companions befriend a marooned Robinson Crusoe. When their harmonious lives are disrupted by two savage cats, they discover the true power of friendship against all odds.

Red is my favorite color, so of course the Parrot named Mak caught my eye. Plus, he looked like a funny character… so a parrot treat it is! This parrot fun food idea would be the perfect healthy treat for an after school snack.

Wouldn’t your kids be excited to find this waiting for them when they got home from school? I know I would! It’s really easy to make and would also be adorable for The Wild Life themed birthday party table.

Back to School Printable Chalkboard Photo Prop Signs

Cute Back to School Printable Chalkboard Photo Prop Signs by @LivingLocurto

Back to school photos are a MUST and we start school here in Texas next week, so it’s time to get ready to capture the sweet school memories! Even if your school has already started, you can still use these fun Back to School Printable Chalkboard Photo Prop Signs. They are not only fun to use on the first day of school, but in photos anytime of the year!

For the last 6 years I have used a small chalkboard as a prop to document what grade each child was entering, because I always forget later when I look back at the photos! It’s been so much fun to see this trend take off since these photos were taken way back in 2009 when my kids were practically babies!

Well, my little old chalkboard has seen it’s last bit of chalk and had to be tossed out. Instead of buying another one, I designed a printable paper version with cute fonts ready to go. All I do is print, trim and snap a photo!

There is an all white chalk version and a multi-colored chalk version for each grade from preschool all the way to 12th grade.

I love to print my back to school photos in black and white and hang them on the wall together. It’s super fun to see how much they have grown over the years!
