The Ultimate Chocolate Birthday Cake
Looking for a fun Chocolate birthday cake idea that’s easy to make? This simple chocolate cake is perfect for a last-minute party idea. Make the ultimate cake with a ready made chocolate cake and decorate it with your favorite chocolate treats and cookies.
My son loves chocolate, so for his 16th birthday cake I wanted to go all out with his favorite things. His birthday is right after Christmas, which is usually a busy time when I don’t have a lot of time to party plan or bake a cake. Buying a cake from our local bakery was the quickest thing I could do, but it wasn’t that exciting looking. I need it to be extra fun and special. That’s when I went looking around for some chocolate treats that would be perfect for decorating his cake.
You only turn 16 once and I think the cake turned out super cute. It definitely became the ultimate chocolate birthday cake!
Easy Chocolate Cake for a 16th Birthday Party
After sharing this cake on my Instagram story, so many of you sent me the sweetest messages that I thought I should put the directions on my blog. I think a lot of chocoholics would love a cake like this.
The birthday boy loved his cake and I had so much fun making it! It truly took longer to unwrap the treats than it did to decorate with them. I can’t believe he’s 16! Seems like yesterday I was planning his Mad Science party and Farm 1st Birthday!
I hope you enjoy this simple chocolate birthday cake idea!
How to Make the Ultimate Chocolate Birthday Cake
I love making easy chocolate desserts and this is on of the easiest cakes ever! Start with a 10″ round chocolate cake. I bought one from the local grocery store bakery, but you could certainly make one. If you need a good chocolate cake recipe click here.
Don’t worry about how the cake looks, because you’ll just be covering it with goodies.
Decorating Your Chocolate Cake
Here is a photo of the chocolate treats I got for my cake. These are most of my son’s favorite things. When decorating your own cake, be sure to get your birthday girl or guy’s favorite things. Don’t worry about calories… they don’t count on birthdays right? Ha!
Since I had a bunch of cookies left over, after decorating the top, I stuck them on the side of the cake.
For a quick and inexpensive cake, I thought it turned out so amazing! I hope you got some creative inspiration for your chocolate lover. If you love chocolate as much as my family, click here to follow my Chocolate Recipes board on Pinterest.

I Love Chickens
My love of chickens started when I got my first pet chickens around the age of four. Here I am with Chicken Little and Chicken Big! I was SO EXCITED! ha!
Forget the pet dog, I was all about the pet chickens. Somewhere, there are photos of me swinging and sliding down my 1970’s swing set slide holding Chicken Little. ha!
Since I can’t have chickens now, I get my chicken fix and fresh eggs by visiting my Aunt Tricia in Oklahoma and her pet chickens! We love chickens so much, we even started a new Facebook page, Chickens are Fun. If you are a chicken fan–> click here to join the fun!
Combine my love of cute party food and chickens, and you have these adorable mama chicken and baby chicken cupcakes.
I asked Pamela to create these cute treats for us and think they turned out so adorable! I love the mama chicken, but the baby chick cupcakes made from mini cupcakes are my favorite. I hope you enjoy these fun party treats!
How to Make Chicken Cupcakes and Baby Chick Cupcakes!
These cute chicken cupcakes were made for a friend who raises backyard chickens. Her chickens lay the most beautiful eggs in shades of blue, green and brown, so I asked if I could trade her some fresh eggs for cupcakes. There was of course no hesitation!
Here is what you need to get started:
- Vanilla cupcakes, regular and mini sized
- Buttercream frosting
- Yellow food coloring
- Toasted coconut
- Chocolate chips, regular and mini sized
- Fruit chew candies (Starbursts or something similar.)
Bake a batch of regular sized cupcakes and mini cupcakes. We used a vanilla cake mix to save time, but if you want to make a fluffy white cake from scratch, try this–> white cake recipe.
After the cupcakes cool, frost your cupcakes with buttercream icing. Either make a batch of your own or buy a few cans of frosting. We used natural (non colored) vanilla colored buttercream for the regular sized cupcakes and light yellow colored frosting for the chicks. You might like this lemon frosting (it’s amazing!).
How to Decorate Chicken Cupcakes
While the frosting is “wet”, dip the sides of your cupcake into toasted coconut making sure to get all around the edges. Here is a simple tutorial on how to toast coconut yourself.
Fruit chews are the perfect candy to cut or mold with your hands to create orange and yellow beaks and red combs. Use regular and mini semi sweet chocolate chips for the eyes.
After you have created your beaks and combs out of the candy, simply place the pieces onto your cupcakes to create adorable chicken faces.
Now place your chicken cupcakes on a fun tray with extra toasted coconut sprinkled around them. Serve and enjoy!
Aren’t these eggs beautiful? I just love them next to the cupcakes, so cute. Try making these chicken cupcakes the next time you have a celebration that calls for some major cuteness!
