You can leave the edible candy eyes the way they are, but we like to make the pupils larger using edible marker for a sweet look. We do this quite often and you can make them look however you would like. Attach them right above the hole in the donut using the icing.

My children love french toast. It is one of those breakfast options that seems like a lot of work, but really, it is simple and easy to make. And takes just as much time as pancakes! What can be better than combining Nutella, strawberries, french toast and whipped cream? It is a sure breakfast winner!

Nutella French Toast - Easy Breakfast Recipe by Divian Connors for LivingLocurto.com

You will need for Nutella French Toast:

  • Slices of bread (I used sliced french bread)
  • 3 eggs
  • 1/2 cup of milk
  • 2tbsp sugar
  • 1tbsp cinnamon
  • Nutella
  • Strawberries
  • Whipped Topping (softened)

Servings: 4 french toast sandwiches

Spread generous amount of Nutella onto 4 slices of bread. Top with remaining bread.

In bowl, combine eggs, milk, sugar and cinnamon, mix/blend well. You can add more milk for less egginess.

Nutella French Toast - Easy chocolate hazelnut and strawberry breakfast Recipe.

Coat both side with egg mixture, allowing it to sit for about a minute or two to soak in the egg mixture.  Let the excess mixture drip off of the bread.

In skillet, coat with nonstick cooking spray and turn heat on low.  I prefer to cook my french toast on low heat to reduce burning of the outside and to ensure that the bread is completely cooked and not soggy. Let cook on low for about 2 minutes, turn over to make sure it is cooking. Continue to turn over once every 3-4 minutes until both sides are golden brown.

Slice each sandwich and top with whipped topping or whipped cream and fresh berries. This would be a perfect Valentine breakfast.

QUICK TIP: To decorate your plate, place a spoonful of Nutella into a plastic sandwich bag. Squeeze into the corner of the bag and clip the tip of the corner with scissors. ‘Pipe’ your design onto the plate before putting on the french toast and berries.

What you’ll need for a Christmas Tree Donut Wall:

  • 1 White Foam Board (20″ x 30″)
  • 4” Lollipop Sticks (You will need 8 sticks cut in half)
  • Yellow Scrapbook Paper
  • Red Scrapbook Paper
  • Pencil
  • Ruler or Measuring Tape
  • 15 Green Glazed Donuts

Step 1

Turn the foam board vertically and measure to find the center. The board will stand up tall when completed.

How to make a Christmas Tree Donut Wall - Step 1. Easy Christmas Party Food Craft by Living Locurto

Step 2

Measure roughly 7” down from the center of the top of the board. This is where the top of the first donut will be placed.

How to make a Christmas Tree Donut Wall - Step 2. Easy Christmas Party Food Craft by Living Locurto

Step 3

Begin arranging the donuts in a “Christmas tree” shape on top of the foam board. Start with one donut in the top row, two in the second row, etc, until you end with five donuts in the bottom row.

How to make a Christmas Tree Donut Wall - Step 3. Easy Christmas Party Food Craft by Living Locurto

Step 4

Using a pencil, mark a spot inside the donuts’ holes right at the very top to mark where you will place the sticks from which they will hang. Remember, DO NOT put the mark in the middle, it must be at the top of the hole where the donut will rest on the stick.

How to make a Christmas Tree Donut Wall - Step 4. Easy Christmas Party Food Craft by Living Locurto

Step 5

Cut each 4” lollipop stick in half and press firmly into the foam board on top of each of your marked spots. The sticks should stay put inside the board, but if you want to insure they don’t fall out, you can hot glue them to the board. If you plan to use this donut wall only one time, I wouldn’t bother with glue! Skipping that step will save yourself some time.

Step 6

Cut a star from yellow scrapbook paper and then hot glue it to the board directly above the top donut.

Cut a 3”x3” square from red scrapbook paper and hot glue it to the board in the center of the bottom row of donuts.

Camping Food Hacks

We are “camping people.”

We along with our extended family have garages and sheds packed with camping gear — sleeping bags, camp stoves, tents, packable chairs, lanterns…you get the drift. We take things like bug repellant and marshmallow roasters very seriously.

Adding kiddos to this camping and road-tripping equation is wonderful, hilarious, and overwhelming.

At least once a summer my husband and I remark to each other about how our first camping trip together included sleeping bags, a box of donuts, a pack of hotdogs, a bag of buns, some soda and firewood.

NOW? Is there a patron saint of family travel packing, because I would pray to them regularly for guidance.

Every time we pack up for a camping trip, we learn something new. Now that our oldest is nine, we feel pretty solid about some of our camping hacks —particularly when it comes to camping food hacks.

Long gone are the days of walking out of the grocery store with one or two bags of food. (Thank the heavens for Costco!) We serve up a sturdy three-meals-a-day while we’re camping.

Here’s how we transport our eggs…because nothing will ruining your magical camp breakfast plans like opening your cooler or trailer fridge to discover your eggs are broken.

Get yourself a bulk container of applesauce, preferably a week or two in advance so you have time to enjoy the applesauce and wash the container.

Then crack your eggs into the container. This container holds 12-18 eggs depending on the size of the eggs you buy.

If you’re careful about how you move this bottle around, you can usually pour out individual eggs for recipes or sunny-side-up eggs. We like scrambled eggs, so I just give that bottle a ferocious shake when I’m ready to roll. (The picture above represents, post-shake eggs.)

That applesauce container became my new travel snacks MVP last summer…

Road Trip Snack Hack

I buy most of our favorite snacks in bulk. But once you’ve got a few kiddos that are well out of toddlerhood, those little snack containers that you’re accustomed to filling full of goldfish and cheerios are not going to get the job done.

6 ounces of cheerios for a roadtrip with a 9 and 6 year old? LOLOLOLOLOL.

So then you’re plastic baggy-ing all this stuff and then, what? Putting it in a bag in the car or in under the seat on an airplane? Probably.

Want to know the number of times my children have stepped on the bag of snacks during a roadtrip: ALL OF THE TIMES.

So instead of bags, I use that same, practically indestructible, bulk applesauce container.

Bonus that it has a narrow spot on the bottle for your hand, and a mouth opening that’s wide enough to accommodate most snacks and small enough to minimize spillage. I said minimize. It’s not a perfect world.

Eggnog Syrup Recipe

Want to make breakfast festive? Make eggnog syrup!

Each year we host a Christmas Eve breakfast with friends. This syrup is always on the menu and without fail I catch people sneaking spoonfuls or asking to DRINK it! It’s that good. It’s buttery, and creamy, and the perfect compliment to Christmas!

We love this syrup with Eggnog Pancakes or King Arthur’s Gluten Free waffles (I’m gluten free, my family is not, they like these waffles better than any other “regular” waffle recipe they’ve ever tried).

Pancake Sausage Stacks

Breakfast is my favorite meal to cook. I love nothing more than filling the bellies of the people I love before they start their day. Kids breakfast ideas can be tricky though.

I want to give them something nutritional, filling, and I need to do it efficiently. School mornings are “crazy bananas” as my sons says.

The last thing I want is a hangry kiddo throwing down in class at 10 in the morning because their breakfast didn’t do the job. When school started last year, my lazy summer mornings came back to bite me. These kids didn’t want to hear that mom wasn’t going to whip up the daily smorgasbord of french toast, chocolate chip waffles, or breakfast burritos that they’d become accustomed to.

So I came up with “Fun Friday.”

Fun Friday is THE day that I surprise them with something extra fun on their breakfast plate. It’s always a surprise. It’s always kid-friendly food. And it’s the glorious meal that I remind them of when I’m dishing up a hearty bowl of steel-cut oats on a Tuesday morning.

But here’s the logistical hiccup for me…IT’S STILL A FREAKING SCHOOL DAY.

I’ve still got to get it on the plate quickly.

There’s no getting around brushing teeth, combing hair, and wearing actual clothes. (“No. You can’t wear your Darth Vader costume to school. Yes, I’m sure.”)

PRO TIP: Fun Friday Breakfast is often made fun by a.) naming the item something fun and/or unique b.) presenting the food in a surprising way.

So, I give you…PANCAKE SAUSAGE STACKS!

You’ll need…
Pancake Sausage Stacks
Pancake mix and the key to making your breakfast dreams come true — Johnsonville Fully Cooked Breakfast Sausage Patties! (And butter and maple syrup.)

Then, all you have to do is whip up a bunch of silver dollar pancakes and warm up those fully cooked sausages in the microwave (40 seconds, cooks up like a dream!)

Assemble your stacks! Pancake, sausage, pancake, sausage, pancake.

YUM…

Don’t believe in the power of Pancake Sausage Stacks?

Here they are. Regular old morning…one is finishing up homework, the other is fully committed to his Hot Wheels.

I made them close their eyes. I do this every Friday. Then I revealed their breakfast.
Pancake Sausage Stacks

Fun Friday, indeed.

INGREDIENTS

DIRECTIONS

  • Prepare pancakes on the griddle or frying pan, taking care to keep your pancakes about 2 inches in diameter. (Silver dollar style.)
  • Prepare breakfast sausage according to package directions. (40 second in microwave.)
  • Assemble stacks, alternating pancakes and sausage, starting and ending with pancakes.*
  • Butter and bathe in maple syrup.

*These stacks are sturdy enough to use 3 sausage patties, depending on the appetite of your kiddo…or adult. Fun Friday is for everyone.

One thing I really loved about these Johnsonville Fully Cooked Breakfast Sausage was that the package was resealable! Breakfast meats are usually a high-commitment ingredient—more time intensive and more messy than I like to tackle on a weekday. I’m so happy to have a delicious protein source that I can quickly add to our plates any day of the week. I’m also a big fan of the turkey variety…and my kiddos can’t tell the difference.

Come over! I’ll make you breakfast…the more the merrier.

This is a sponsored conversation written by me on behalf of Johnsonville. The opinions and text are all mine.
