Make the Ultimate Chocolate Birthday Cake in minutes with this easy no bake dessert idea! A fun semi-homemade cake no chocolate lover could resist.
The Ultimate Chocolate Birthday Cake
Looking for a fun Chocolate birthday cake idea that’s easy to make? This simple chocolate cake is perfect for a last-minute party idea. Make the ultimate cake with a ready made chocolate cake and decorate it with your favorite chocolate treats and cookies.
My son loves chocolate, so for his 16th birthday cake I wanted to go all out with his favorite things. His birthday is right after Christmas, which is usually a busy time when I don’t have a lot of time to party plan or bake a cake. Buying a cake from our local bakery was the quickest thing I could do, but it wasn’t that exciting looking. I need it to be extra fun and special. That’s when I went looking around for some chocolate treats that would be perfect for decorating his cake.
You only turn 16 once and I think the cake turned out super cute. It definitely became the ultimate chocolate birthday cake!
Easy Chocolate Cake for a 16th Birthday Party
After sharing this cake on my Instagram story, so many of you sent me the sweetest messages that I thought I should put the directions on my blog. I think a lot of chocoholics would love a cake like this.
The birthday boy loved his cake and I had so much fun making it! It truly took longer to unwrap the treats than it did to decorate with them. I can’t believe he’s 16! Seems like yesterday I was planning his Mad Science party and Farm 1st Birthday!
I hope you enjoy this simple chocolate birthday cake idea!
How to Make the Ultimate Chocolate Birthday Cake
I love making easy chocolate desserts and this is on of the easiest cakes ever! Start with a 10″ round chocolate cake. I bought one from the local grocery store bakery, but you could certainly make one. If you need a good chocolate cake recipe click here.
Don’t worry about how the cake looks, because you’ll just be covering it with goodies.
Decorating Your Chocolate Cake
Here is a photo of the chocolate treats I got for my cake. These are most of my son’s favorite things. When decorating your own cake, be sure to get your birthday girl or guy’s favorite things. Don’t worry about calories… they don’t count on birthdays right? Ha!
Since I had a bunch of cookies left over, after decorating the top, I stuck them on the side of the cake.
For a quick and inexpensive cake, I thought it turned out so amazing! I hope you got some creative inspiration for your chocolate lover. If you love chocolate as much as my family, click here to follow my Chocolate Recipes board on Pinterest.

Having a Costco membership is sure to save you money. But what about precious time? They say time is money, so here are 7 time-saving tips for the next time you go shopping at Costco.
Time Saving Tips For Shopping at Costco
I love shopping at Costco but it always takes much more time than I planned. After going to Costco with one of our Living Locurto team members, Naomi, I was shocked by how organized and quick she was! As a mom of three and apparently an expert Costco shopper, Naomi has a lot of great tricks and tips up her sleeve! I asked her to share a few time saving Costco shopping tips to help us out during this busy holiday season.
They say time is money, so here are 7 time-saving tips for the next time you go shopping at Costco.
7 Ideas to Save Time Shopping at Costco
We know life can be a struggle. It’s hard to get it all done, especially during the holidays. We hope these simple tips will help save you time and money the next time you shop at Costco. For more time saving tips, check out –> these great organization ideas here.
1. Know The Costco Parking Lot
Getting in and out of the parking lot can be a challenge. Avoid the traffic jams and find out if your Costco has a back driveway. Many Costco stores do! If your Costco has a back or lesser used driveway, treat it as your own personal road to retail bliss. It may sound crazy, but parking in the back of the parking lot will save you time just because of the ease of getting in and out of the parking lot.
2. Know The Store Layout
Knowing the store layout is just as important as knowing the parking lot. My favorite time-saving Costco tip is to take a list, stick to it, and know where exactly everything is in the store. If you need something from the back of the store, avoid going down the middle aisles. Stick to the side aisles and avoid the throngs of customers jockeying for position around the sample tables.
3. Avoid The Busiest Times
Playing bumper carts is no fun. Do a little research and find out when the best times to visit your Costco store are. Generally, Costco is busiest on the weekends, the day or two before a major holiday, or on the first day of a new coupon book. One of the quietest times to shop at Costco are the days in between coupon books. If you aren’t buying anything on a coupon, go in between sales and enjoy the wide aisles all to yourself.
4. Stick To A List
It is so easy to be distracted by all the new shiny items Costco has on display. Stay strong! I’ve shopped so much at Costco that I have developed a master list of items I buy regularly. At home, I’ll review the list and mark which items I need to buy. Then when I arrive at Costco, I’m armed with my list and plan and it seriously saves me time AND money! Click here for cute free printable lists.
5. Skip The Samples
Ah, the samples. Everyone loves the Costco samples. Steer clear, as tasty as they may look! This is a time pitfall at Costco, with hordes of shoppers gathering around waiting for the toaster oven timer to ding. Be honest with yourself: You can live without the little morsel, but you’ll never get your precious time back…move along!
6. Look For A Fast Cashier
Sometimes the longest line is also the fastest line. Look for a cashier that is really moving customers through quickly. Head for a line with two Costco employees (one scanning and one loading the cart up). If you shop as much as I do at Costco, you may even find a favorite cashier that is always super fast and efficient.
7. Have Your Car Trunk Ready To Load
Make sure your trunk is empty so that loading your Costco purchases into your car will be a breeze. Costco doesn’t provide shopping bags, but don’t fall for the stiff cardboard boxes they offer to hold your groceries! Instead, bring your own shopping bags and load your purchases up yourself.
Make sure you have a good insulated bag ready for your frozen items. This may sound counter-intuitive to saving time, but once you arrive home, simply carrying the bags into your home will be so much easier. And you won’t have that stiff cardboard box to deal with.
What are your favorite Costco shopping tips? Let us know in the comments below.

My Grandma Chunkie made the best Chocolate Pie! With only 5 ingredients, this rich chocolate pie recipe is a quick and easy dessert everyone loves!
Grandma Chunkie’s Chocolate Pie Recipe
This chocolate pie recipe is our family tradition thanks to my fun Great-Grandma Chunkie! I remember Grandma Chunkie as a fun little spit fire with pink tinted hair and always wearing a cute apron. I guess she was heavy as a child and that’s where the name came from. All my great-aunts and uncles had nicknames. One was even called Aunt No No.
I loved going to Grandma Chunkie’s house, because she was always baking something tasty. She grew up working in her family’s restaurant in Tulsa. She also let me play with all her jewelry (clip on earrings!) and make-up. I loved hearing stories of her travels and times when she dated a pro-wrestler… the kind like you see now on the WWF! Ha.
She would tell me crazy stories, like how you had to be careful traveling back when she was a girl because Indians would kidnap you. Or the time she and her brother ran away when they were really little. They tied themselves together so they wouldn’t get lost (or kidnapped by Indians) on the train. Who knows what was the truth? Ha!

Grandma Chunkie was also a sister of Christ! When I would go on ski trips, she would pray on a cloth and make me put it in my pocket to keep me safe:-) In college, I would get these little prayer cloths in the mail every now and then.
This photo of Grandma Chunkie is probably from the 1940’s. I think she is alive and well in my daughter! I see a lot of Grandma Chunkie in my own little spit fire.
The best Chocolate Pie
Grandma Chunkie made THE best pies! Usually for our Thanksgiving dinners, we would have about three pumpkin pies along with banana, lemon and chocolate. I never liked pumpkin pie, so she always made me my own mini chocolate pie. A Thanksgiving tradition, I started with my kids. I’ve posted this recipe before, but in case you missed it, here it is again. Enjoy!!
Grandma Chunkie’s Easy to Make Rich & Creamy Chocolate Pie
For all you chocoholics, this pie is a must! Here’s the recipe that she wrote on a small piece of paper. You can print the recipe below.

- Add 1-9 oz Cool Whip into chocolate mixture
- Pour into baked pie shell and keep cool until ready to serve.
