1. Celebrity

The object of the game Celebrity is to be quick thinking with names and be the last one standing!

How to play the game:

  1. Sit in a circle and go clockwise around the room.
  2. The first person starts by naming a celebrity by first and last name.
  3. The next person has 10 seconds to shout out a celebrity’s name that has a first name that starts with the letter of the previous person’s celebrity’s last name.

Example: If I say Will Ferrel, the next person would have to name a celebrity with the first name starting with the letter “F”,such as Frank Sinatra.

Rules of the game:

  • You’re out if you can’t think of a celebrity’s name in 10 seconds or less.
  • No repeating celebrity names. Once the name has been said, that’s it.
  • No one named celebrities.
  • If your celebrity’s first and last name start with the same letter, then you reverse and go counterclockwise, etc.

Example: If I said Amy Adams, the game reverses in the opposite direction.

Ways to make the game harder:

  • Have a theme such as movie stars, cartoon characters, musicians, etc.
  • Make it a drinking game and take a shot if you can’t think of a name in time.

2. Two Truths and a Lie

Two Truths and a Lie is a fun icebreaker game for a group to get to know each other better and perfect for all ages.

How to play the game:

  • Pick a person to start. They must tell two things about themselves that are true and one thing that is a lie.
  • Everyone gets to guess which fact is the lie.
  • Once everyone has guessed, the person will reveal what was true and what was the lie.
  • If only one person was correct, that person can go next. Or just go around in a circle.
  • This can go around as many times as you would like or just so everyone gets the chance to go once.

3. Name That Star

Name that star is a game similar to name that tune, but you have to name the singer or band, not the song.

How to play the game:

  • Write the names of famous singers or bands on small pieces of paper and place into a bowl. You’ll need 3-4 names per guest. Make sure these are names that the party guests will know.
  • Guests take turns picking out one name, then must sing a verse of that singer’s song.
  • The other guests will try to guess who the person is trying to be.
  • If you don’t know the star you picked, you can draw again, but you lose a life. Three lives lost and you’re out.
  • Give out prizes for the best performance.

4. Conversation Starters

  • Examples: LIKE: Chocolate, Traveling  •  HATE: Snakes, Asparagus
  • Collect the papers and have one person read them aloud one at a time while everyone else tries to guess who wrote what.

Fortnite: The Video Game Craze You Don’t Need To Worry About

If you have a gamer in the house, chances are you’re familiar with “Fortnite”.  It’s taking gaming households by storm.  Fortnite is the new video game craze capturing excitement of kids, and adults, everywhere.

EPIC Games

Fortnite is a survival game that drops 100 players on to an island. You skydive out of a plane… (err…battle bus…my son just corrected me) and are thrown immediately in to survival mode.  Last man standing is the winner.  Although this is a hunger-game type battle to the death, the cartoonish characters and landscape make the game fun and lively.  This game is rated T for teen due to mild violence, but truly this feels more like a paintball game than a bloody battle scene.

Why is Fortnite so fun?

I don’t fully understand it, but I do know I can’t pry my boys off the xbox without a fight or  desperate plea of “After this round?!?! PLEEEAAAASE?!?! There’s only 10 of us left!”.

<insert eye roll and angry-mom-sigh>

Parenting Tip: Rounds can take up to an hour so don’t let those little rugrats drag you in to approving “just one more round” 20 minutes before bed. Let me tell you, I have been known to pull a power cord here and there.

Another piece of the game that gleans giggles from even my toughest teenager: dance moves. So many dance moves. If only my life could garner the same excitement as it did for my children when they discovered the “floss” had been released as a dance option in Fortnite. In fact, a lot of dance moves have been hijacked from our favorite characters and shows.

As gamers try to survive they will collect weapons, build structures and even work as a team to survive as long as possible.  All the while a “storm shield” inches closer and closer to the middle of the island, forcing players closer together for a battle. And you don’t want to get stuck outside the safe zone because then… you guessed it, you die.

There are a lot of explosions and references to real-life guns and weapons, but no blood.  It’s all fun and games.  There is a fair amount of “taunting” from other players via emotes (aka actions of other players such as slow claps) but nothing terrible — just a little bit of playful banter.

Be aware that like any other online game, your gamers can converse in real life with real people.  These individuals can be added to a friends list or online party. Based on settings and the gaming console (or computer) you are on, anyone can join a “party” which allows real time conversation (like being on the phone together). Be sure to check your privacy settings if this is a concern of yours.

Epic Games

With constant updates and additions to the game (new dances, outfits, etc) your kids won’t be getting bored of Fortnite any time soon.  All in all, it’s just good fun; a strategy game that makes them think and work as a team to survive. My kids even convinced their Grandma to play online with them. Best. Day. Ever.

KinderPerfect is the New ‘Cards Against Humanity’ but for Parents (You WANT This!)

KinderPerfect is the new Cards Against Humanity, but for Parents.  If you need something to keep you and your fellow parents entertained through the holiday get-togethers, cabin trips and late-nights, this is the game for you!  This game was inspired by sleep deprivation and too many episodes of freaking Dora the Explorer.

Party Games for Parents, Kinderperfect is the new Cards Against Humanity like Apples to Apples

KinderPerfect is simple and hilarious.  A person selects a red card and the players submit from their hand a white card that they think the red-card holder will like that ideally somehow matches the phrase on the red card.  The holder of the red card selects a winner from the white cards, and that winner gets to keep the red card.  The object of the game is to win the most red cards.

KinderPerfect was created by Washington DC-based husband and wife team Amy and Wayan Vota. The couple was inspired by their daughters — nine-year-old Hanalei and eight-year-old Archer — to put a parenting twist on Cards Against Humanity. “My wife and I loved playing Cards Against Humanity but we felt the cards didn’t really speak to our experience as parents,” Wayan tells Scary Mommy. “What are the true reasons why Mommy drinks? I’m going to put puke, pee, and Calliou.”

The couple started creating their own parenting-themed cards to mix in to their Cards Against Humanity deck. Soon their parent friends were having so much fun with the made up cards that the group found themselves playing exclusively with their own cards. After a super successful Kickstarter campaign that raised over $20,000 from 800 backers  you can now order KinderPerfect on Amazon, without even making the trip to Target.

Vota says thanks to the Kickstarter campaign, they had no problems coming up with hilarious question and answer options for the original 210 card deck. “We had over 800 parents give us 7,000 card ideas — it was crazy,” he says. “Ask parents, ‘What drives you mad?’ and they’ll have a few answers.”

Using actual KinderPerfect players as sounding boards for ideas, the Votas worked to come up with new cards that could create answers that aren’t just funny but “perfectly cringeworthy.” Vota explains that the game is so fun because these cards echo the natural humor we parents deal with day in and day out. He says his goal was to create cards that would have players saying, “‘Oh dear God, let’s stop and have a conversation about the time I had to deal with a poop mural.’”

You can grab the original deck right now, or you can pre-order the brand new 400 card deck that drops next week and have it arrive in time for Thanksgiving Break!  I know what we’ll be playing at our annual Eat-All-the-Thanksgiving-Leftovers-Now Feast!

8 Things to Buy VS Make for Thanksgiving

Trending on Pinterest: 12 Tips for Traveling with Kids

We’ve traveled quite a bit this summer and it looks like we’ll be traveling plenty this fall and winter with the holidays!  It seems there’s always another road trip to look forward to with our children and we’ve found a few things that have worked amazingly well to keep everyone happy when we go.  Pinterest is an amazing resource for fun travel ideas with kids and certainly helped me add to this list.  Here are 12 tips for traveling with kids, in no particular order:

1. Cover Your Seats

Find an old sheet and cover your seats!  It saves them in the long run AND in the short run.  It is so much easier to pick up a sheet, shake it off and move on after a spill than it is to fully vacuum your seats.  Sheets can keep sweaty legs from sticking to leather, goldfish from diving all the way into the cushions and other more unpleasant spills contained.  Just be sure to cut our holes for seatbelts!  Seat covers like these are amazing too at helping protect your seats from those long car rides.

2. Buy Headphones

For everyone.  You will thank me.  Instead of listening to Moana for the millionth time (without even getting to watch it!) get your kids headphones.  It means you can talk privately for hours or listen to your own music and audiobooks in the car!  Since our car doesn’t have it’s own entertainment system we actually have our children watch movies on the tablet and use a splitter for the headphones, meaning we can talk uninterrupted.  It’s the best.  And be sure to get them over the ear headphones-earbuds tend to be less user friendly and more dangerous for little ears. Try these for something fun and effective.

3. Netflix offers downloads now!

Going along with using tablets, Netflix has begun offering downloadable content for those long drives to people who’s car’s do not have their own wifi.  This also means using less or no data while you drive-a huge perk!  You can find more information at

4. Audiobooks

I love audiobooks.  I never thought I would but now that I have an entire library on my phone I just love being able to plug in anywhere and enjoy a book!  Since our children have their own entertainment and headphones to go along with it, my husband and I listen to audiobooks when we drive to fill the lulls in conversation (we’ve been married 12 years, we literally know everything about each other at this point and can catch up in 2 hours leaving endless hours of driving to fill).  If you need a book suggestion, check out Dad is Fat by Jim Gaffigan.  You’ll thank me.

5. XM Radio

I had no idea what I was missing out on by not taking advantage of XM radio.  If you know you’ll be travelling in the car quite a bit this summer, XM radio is definitely something to consider.  In all of our adventures all over these united states we never once lost service and it is so nice to always have music available.  We often find ourselves picking a genre for every city we’re in and loving listening to old music from high school!  There’s even stations with stand-up comedy and sports if you’re sick of music.

6. Emesis Bags

I stashed these in my dashboard during my pregnancy and now I’m so grateful to have a few extra still in there!  Emesis bags are made to efficiently contain vomit and are great insurance for long trips and possible car-sickness.  In a flash you can grab one and hand it to a car-sick kid and after twist it up (containing all contents and smells) and throw it away at your next stop.  Life saver.

7. Refillable Tumblers

One of my biggest pet peeves about traveling is never having enough water.  I feel like we’re constantly buying water bottles from convenience stores that cost way too much, or taking up half of our trunk with a cooler full of water bottles and still burning through them leaving my car full of empty water bottles.  Buying everyone their own re-usable tumbler has been the solution!  You can fill them to the top with ice and water at most gas stations for free and if your water gets warm or you run out, just stop and fill it up again!  This has saved us so much money and the planet too.

8. Window Markers

Or washable dry erase markers.  If you’re looking for something outside of electronics, drawing on the windows is a great way to pass the time.  You can outline your surroundings or keep track of games!

9. Print a few Road Trip Games

I don’t like having a lot of clutter in the car, but these two games are perfect and could be laminated and played over and over again as you travel!

10. Eat at Chick’Fil’A

Or other places with a playplace!  A few of the gas stations on this side of the country have started installing playgrounds and it is the best!  Getting our kids out to play for a minute is always a good idea, and even if it adds an hour to our trip I never regret stopping for a minute to stretch our legs.

11. Consider your Accommodations

Find hotels with breakfast, pools, and shuttles to where you’re going.  We recently went to Lake Las Vegas with our children and I was delighted at how family friendly it was!  I had been looking at the usual places we stay there and realized just how much they don’t love children at casinos.  When we go to Disneyland I’m always so grateful for a shuttle to the park instead of worrying about/paying for parking.  And be sure to see if you can stay at a hotel slightly outside of town to avoid traffic and parking fees!

12. Bring Wipes

My last and final and probably most important tip is to bring wipes.  We’ve saved ourselves so much heartache by always packing wipes when we travel.  Even when it’s just adults or kids out of diapers they never fail to come in handy.  Always carry a pack of wipes.
