Easy Recycled Bottle Cat Container

Recycled Bottle Cat Containers make a cute, and best of all FREE craft! I came up with this fun idea after doing a little spring cleaning.

My cat is not feeling well and living in my bathroom right now, which means I’m constantly cleaning that room for him. I found a bunch of old shampoo bottles that I started to trash, but decided to turn them into cat containers instead. I guess my cat inspired me!

Here’s what I got at CVS:

  • Suave Ocean Breeze Body Wash for my daughter who loves body wash. This contains mineral-rich sea algae extract, and is infused with Vitamin E, which can help condition her dry skin.
  • Suave Keratin Smoothing Shampoo & Conditioner for me! Did you know your hair’s natural keratin protein depletes over time, leading to frizzy and unmanageable hair. This helps restore and tame unruly strands for smoother silky hair.

Go ahead and use up and recycle those half-empty bottles with this fun cat container craft. Then head over to CVS for some great values. Right now get 2 for $6 + Buy 2 and get $2 ExtraBucks rewards with your CVS card.

I think these easy Recycled Bottle Cat Containers would be fun for a kid’s birthday party activity. Just have pre-cut bottles cut and let kids draw their own cat faces on the bottles with a sharpie.

What you’ll need:

  • Shampoo, lotion or body wash bottles (Remove labels with nail polish remover)
  • Sharpie
  • Exacto knife
  • Scissors
  • Sand paper (optional)

Recycled bottle cat container is a simple craft! Easy repurposed shampoo bottles turned into cute kitty cat containers.

  1. Start by drawing a line for the head and ears with your sharpie on the front of the bottle.
  2. On the back, draw the cat’s tail.
  3. Carefully begin cutting out the cat’s ears and move towards the back towards the tail.
  4. Cut as much of the bottle away from the tail with the blade, then use scissors to shape everything nice and neat. If the edges are too rough or sharp, sand down with sandpaper.
  5. Wash out any extra product from the bottle and clean any pen marks.
  6. Draw a cat face and you’re done.

Glow in the Dark Galaxy Jars

Sponsored by DreamWorks Animation Television

With kids out of school for the holidays, this is the perfect time to get crafty at home! Today’s craft idea for these easy glow in the dark Galaxy Jars was inspired by Tales of Arcadis: 3Below, a cute new animated series streaming now on Netflix. It’s perfect for the whole family to watch together over the holiday break!

From the director Guillermo del Toro and the team behind DreamWorks Trollhunters, 3Below is a hilarious tale of alien royalty who must escape intergalactic bounty hunters by blending in on a primitive junk heap known as Earth.

Make one or two of these Galaxy Jars, grab some popcorn and snuggle up for some out of this world family adventures!

Easy Galaxy Jars Craft

I thought glow in the dark Galaxy Jars would be fun to make and then light up while watching this new series! After we got to testing the galaxy jars, I came up with two different versions for you to choose from.

How to make Glow in the Dark Galaxy Jars. An easy DIY craft tutorial and party decor idea for kids by Living Locurto.

  • On the left is the No-Mess Galaxy Jar version with a printable galaxy backdrop from 3Below.
  • On the right is the slimy Ooey Gooey Galaxy Jar version that I know your kids will enjoy making. Just like Princess Aja’s alien dog, Luug, it’s a slobber mess, but of course super fun!

How to make Glow in the Dark Galaxy Jars

With only a few ingredients, these glowing Galaxy Jars are a piece of cake to make! Here are the directions for both versions that I showed in the photo above.

What you’ll need to make the Ooey Gooey Galaxy Jars:

How to make Glow in the Dark Galaxy Jars. An easy DIY craft tutorial and party decor idea for kids by Living Locurto.

Step 1

Remove the caps to the glue and squeeze some of each color onto a plate (plastic disposable is best). Use a plastic spoon to pick up some blue glue and rub it around the inside of a glass jar. Coat the jar well, but not too thick.

Next, spread some purple glue around, then add some pink in several places.

Galaxy Jars are an easy DIY craft tutorial and party decor idea for kids by Living Locurto.

Step 2

Place the jar into the microwave and set the timer to 40 seconds. The heat from the microwave will heat the glue making it crystalize on the glass. You might need to heat for 30 additional seconds if you don’t notice the glue drying.

CAUTION: The jar will be HOT. Use an oven mitt to remove the glass from the microwave.

Let the jar completely cool.

Add more glue if you want more color and repeat the heating process. Only do this a few times, overheating can cause the glue to burn and darken the glass.

Step 3

Once the jars have cooled, add a battery operated votive candle or glow stick and enjoy looking into the galaxy when it gets dark!

Yep, you can actually eat this if you feel the need for a snack during play time. My daughter is obsessed with slime. She recently made the best Unicorn Fluffy Slime Recipe that went crazy around the internet. She has a slime Instagram account where she makes videos of her latest slime creations, so I thought it would be fun to do a summer slime series here on Living Locurto!

I’m excited to start off our Summer Slime Series with this incredible edible Reese’s Slime Recipe! Both recipes are super easy to make and when you mix them together, you have one of our favorite candies.

The slime should soften after you knead it. The chocolate ends up being more like putty, so if it is too hard and crumbly, add it to a bowl with a tablespoon of peanut butter and heat in the microwave for 15-30 seconds. Stir and knead. Add cornstarch to prevent stickiness until you achieve desired texture. Store in the refrigerator in an airtight container. This recipe is actually really edible for up to 2 days after you make it.

Step 2: Cut unicorn ears about 1.5 inches high out of white card stock.

Step 3: Trim the pink boa into 3-4 inch pieces. This might be very messy depending on your brand of boa! I found one at a craft store for a few dollars, but it made a mess after cutting. I suggest cutting over a trash can.

Step 4: Punch a hole into the bottom of a cup, pull the end of the frosting bag through the hole then do the same with the piece of pink boa.

What I love about this recipe is that it blends three pretty pastel colors into a unicorn rainbow! If you use the exact color combination as pictured below, your slime when combined, should turn a darker shade of gray blue. Using other colors might make your slime turn a yucky brown color. So be sure to follow directions carefully on this slime recipe.

Concerned about Borax?

This slime recipe includes white glue, shaving cream and a small amount of borax powder diluted in water. My daughter has very sensitive hands and this slime does not affect her hands at all. If you are unsure about using borax, please watch this informative video from Stephen Spangler, the king of science projects for kids. If you prefer not to use borax to activate the slime, use saline solution instead. If you are allergic to borax, shaving cream or glue please do not make.

From Parents.com:

Experts like Vanessa Stoloff, M.D., a family practitioner at the University of Pennsylvania, say the whole Borax business is actually pretty benign. In fact, the DIY thing is currently going down in her own home courtesy of her 11-year-old twin daughters, who recently made a batch of cookie dough slime that smelled like fresh-baked chocolate chip cookies. “As long as your kids’ slime recipes don’t include tasting it,” she told Parents.com, “topical Borax shouldn’t affect skin—especially at the amount being used.”

Dr. Jason Hack, a toxicologist from Rhode Island Hospital, also has a daughter who’s into making slime. “It’s a great activity,” he told WPRI 12 Eyewitness News. And he echoed Dr. Stoloff’s arguement that the small amount of Borax the kids are using is not absorbed through the skin. “It would take eating a lot of it to actually become toxic,” he explained.

If your child does accidentally ingest any slime that contains Borax, you should contact the American Association of Poison Control at 800-222-1222 immediately.

Fluffy Slime is Awesome!

What makes this slime so fluffy is shaving cream. The fluffy sensation won’t last forever, so play with it right after you make it.

How to make Rainbow Unicorn Slime in only 5 minutes! An easy video tutorial and homemade fluffy slime recipe. A fun kids craft activity.

  • 1/2 cup white glue
  • 1/2 cup foaming shaving cream
  • 1/2 teaspoon borax powder
  • 1 cup water
  • Blue, pink and yellow neon food coloring
  1. In a large bowl mix glue and shaving cream with a spoon.
  2. In a separate bowl or cup, mix 1/2 teaspoon of borax in 1 cup of water. Stir until the borax is dissolved. (To speed up this process, place mixture in a glass cup and microwave for 30-60 seconds.)

  3. Add about a teaspoon of the borax and water mixture into the glue/shaving cream bowl and stir.

  4. Knead with your hands and if it’s too sticky, add a tiny bit more borax and water mixture.
  5. Once your fluffy slime recipe is ready. Separate into three pieces.
  6. Add a drop of blue food coloring to the first piece of slime and knead until the entire piece is blue.
  7. Repeat with the other two pieces of slime by adding one drop of pink and one drop of yellow to them.
  8. When all three pieces are colored, add them together.
  9. Gently knead the fluffy slime until you have a pretty mixture of the rainbow.
  10. The longer you knead this slime, the more the colors will become one.

If you prefer not to use Borax to activate the slime, try to substitute with saline solution or laundry detergent. If you don’t use Borax, do not use water and you may need to add baking soda to thicken the slime.

Rubber gloves recommended for sensitive skin.

* DO NOT EAT. Not for small children without adult supervision.
* Do not make if you have skin allergies to cleaning supplies, glue, food dye or shaving cream.

An Herb Fairy Garden is a fun edible garden for your kitchen!

Get your kids excited about planting flowers or growing their own fruits and veggies by welcoming the summer fairies with a Kitchen Herb Fairy Garden. We love all things fairy and this simple herb fairy garden was the perfect addition to my new kitchen.

Do you think about the soil you use for your flower pots or garden? Well, you should. I am partnering with Ecoscraps today and love their story!

Ecoscraps was created by people who saw a better way to make soil, better for our gardens and better for our planet. Ecoscraps collects food waste from grocery stores and composts the waste into natural and organic garden soils and plant foods. Since 2011, Ecoscraps has diverted more than 75 million pounds of food waste from the landfill. How cool is that?

Making a Kitchen Herb Fairy Garden is a wonderful activity to do with your kids this summer!

You can make your fairy garden with flowers, but for ours we chose herbs that we can use in recipes. A fairy garden can be for the outdoors or indoors, in a fancy flower pot or a simple box. The ideas are endless!

How to Make a Kitchen Herb Fairy Garden

This tutorial for making a fairy garden for your kitchen is super easy and hopefully brings you some magical inspiration for a fun craft to do with your family or friends!

1. Decide on a Fairy Garden Theme

First of all, you want to decide on your fairy garden theme. Be sure to get the kids involved with this process. Shopping for fairy garden accessories is half of the fun!

Will it be a magical garden with a little house and swing set to welcome fairies each night? Or will you decide on a theme based on your favorite hobbies, toys, time period or animals?

I love chickens, so had to add a cute chicken coop to ours!

Tiny Chicken Coop. An Herb Fairy Garden is a fun container garden for your kitchen! Easy tutorial for how to make a mini fairy garden for your home.

Here are some fun fairy garden theme ideas to get you started:

  • Cats
  • Dogs
  • Farm
  • Carnival
  • Dinosaurs
  • Trolls
  • Gnomes
  • Horses
  • Camping
  • Playground
  • Log Cabin
  • Medieval Times

2. Choose Your Container

Since our herb fairy garden was for our kitchen, I chose a galvanized container that matched my kitchen decor. You can put a fairy garden in just about any kind of container, you don’t need to limit yourself to the usual terracotta flower pot.

3. Choose the Herbs

Think about what herbs you would use the most. I love adding fresh mint to my drinks, so mint was definitely on my list of herbs to buy. Because I make a lot of pasta dishes, oregano and basil were on my list as well. If you have a larger container, add some colorful flowering plants as well.

An Herb Fairy Garden is a fun container garden for your kitchen! Easy tutorial for how to make a mini fairy garden for your home.

4. Choose the Soil

When growing any kind of food, such as herbs, it’s best to use organic potting soil such as Ecoscraps, which can be found at Target.

5. Design Your Fairy Garden

Now that you have your accessories, container, herbs and soil, you are ready to start designing your magical fairy garden!

If using a container with no drain like I did, protect it by lining the container with plastic. Then add some rocks to the bottom before adding the soil. This will help the water drain and not drown your plants if you over-water them.

Fill your container with potting soil and add your favorite plants and flowers making sure to think of the scene you want to create as you plant. Add various heights and take note to leave space for plant growth.

Before planting herbs, loosen the soil at the bottom so the roots are exposed to the soil.

Crafting with Kids – Chinese Calligraphy Canvas

My kids love drawing Chinese calligraphy. At the Indianapolis Children’s Museum, there is an exhibit called Take Me There China with a couple of different spots where you can practice Chinese calligraphy. Children seem to easily take to Chinese calligraphy from what I’ve seen – even those who are not old enough to write letters yet. Kids (and adults) can find it relaxing and fun to draw the sweeping lines in Chinese calligraphy. Seeing how interested my kids were in calligraphy gave me the idea to try an art project for Chinese New Year.

Each of my kids created their own personalized, colorful canvas showing off their calligraphy style and representing some of the things that are important to them. Using “My Little Book of Chinese Words”, a children’s book full of Chinese calligraphy (I’m sure you can find something like this at your local library), I asked my kids to pick 4 different words that somehow represented themselves. For example, my son chose “water” since he’s a swimmer, “spring” because that is when he was born, “draw” as it is a favorite hobby of his and “dog” to represent our family dog.

First, the kids used painter’s tape to tape a long strip across the canvas and a strip down the canvas, making four sections. It doesn’t have to be exact squares. My daughter chose to make her lines diagonal which I think shows her unique personality. Using tempura paint, the kids painted each of the four sections a different color of their choice. We then let the canvases dry and removed the painter’s tape.

Once the tape is removed, it leaves four colorful sections with a white border. Finally, I let the kids choose white or black paint to write the four words they had picked. Make sure to pick a paint brush with a fine-tip.

The kids were so proud of their colorful calligraphy canvases. I couldn’t wait to hang these up in their rooms – each unique and special just like they are.
