The Cutest How To Train Your Dragon Cake Recipes!

Looking for a fun How to Train Your Dragon Cake for a birthday party or other special celebration? Then you’re going to love how easy these dragon cakes are to make with this fluffy white cake and buttercream frosting recipe!

How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World will be in theaters February 22 and I’m excited to share how I easily turned Toothless, the Night Fury dragon and his new friend, Light Fury, into adorable cakes. Make one cake or both, either way they’ll turn out to be the cutest cakes for any party!

How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World

How To Train Your Dragon Cake Recipe

If you’ve never seen these films, be sure to get caught up the first two, because they are super cute! In How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World , Hiccup is the Viking chief and ruler of Berk. He created a gloriously chaotic dragon utopia along with his fearsome Night Fury dragon, Toothless.

When the sudden appearance of female Light Fury coincides with the darkest threat their village has ever faced, Hiccup and Toothless must leave the only home they’ve known and journey to a hidden world thought only to exist in myth.

How To Train Your Dragon Cake Tutorial

The secret to making a How to Train Your Dragon cake is to use my printables! I spent a long time designing printables that would work just right for a small cake. I wanted to turn both dragons into cakes, so I used 5″ round cake pans. Click here for a 5″ round cake pan.

For these printables to work perfectly, I suggest a 5″-6″ cake pan. You can make one cake, but they sure look cute when you have both the white and black dragons together!

How To Make Dragon Cake Printables

First, download and print these dragon cake printables in the link below (scroll down). Once you have printed and cut them out, start by hot gluing 1/2 inch cut paper straws onto the back of the eyes.

Easy How To Train Your Dragon Cake Tutorial! Fluffy white cake recipe for a Night Fury or Light Fury dragon birthday cake with printables.

I used toothpicks to attach the other dragon parts into my cake.

IMPORTANT: When the paper touches the buttercream frosting, it can make the paper greasy. When inserting your printables into the cake, try leaving a gap between the paper and the cake if possible. I suggest not adding the printables until right before you are ready to serve the cake.

Toothless is black, so if the frosting touches the black paper, you can’t see any residue. Isn’t he cute?

I love how pretty the Light Fury cake turned out!

Make sure your printables do not touch the white dragon cake, because you will have some of the frosting soak into the white paper. My fluffy white cake recipe is perfect for this dragon!

How to Train Your Dragon White Cake Recipe

Easy How To Train Your Dragon Cake tutorial. Fluffy white cake recipe for a Night Fury or Light Fury dragon cake. A perfect birthday party cake!

White Cake

  • 3  cups  cake flour
  • 2  cups  sugar
  • 4  teaspoons  baking powder
  • 1/2  teaspoon  salt
  • 5  egg whites (room temperature)
  • 1  entire egg (room temperature)
  • 1  cup  whole milk
  • 2   teaspoons  pure almond extract
  • 3/4 cup  unsalted butter

White Buttercream Frosting

  • 1 cup butter (softened)
  • 4 cups confectioners sugar
  • 2 teaspoons clear vanilla extract
  • 1 pinch of salt
  • 3 tablespoons milk
  • Black food gel (if making Night Fury)

White Cake Directions

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Grease and line three 5” or 6” inch cake pans with parchment paper. (I used 5 inch for my dragon cakes)
  2. Whisk the eggs, milk, and almond extract together in a large bowl; set aside.
  3. In a mixer, gently combine the flour, sugar, baking powder and salt together.
  4. Add butter and mix on low until you get a crumbly texture.
  5. Add the liquid mixture a small portion at a time and mix until light and fluffy.
  6. Pour the batter evenly into each cake pan.
  7. Bake 25-30 minutes. You don’t want to over bake! Check at 15-20 minutes to test if it’s done by placing a toothpick in the middle of the cake. If it comes out clean, the cake is done.
  8. Let the cake cool for 15 minutes before removing from the pans.

Frosting Directions

  1. In a mixer, cream the butter until it is smooth for about 3 minutes.
  2. Add the confectioner’s sugar 1/2 a cup at a time then mix another minute.
  3. Add vanilla, a pinch of salt and milk until frosting has reached the preferred consistency.

  4. If making the Night Fury cake, mix in black food gel a few drops at a time until you get the desired color.

Assembling the Cake

  1. Make the top of the cakes even by using a serrated knife and cutting the cake top to level the surface.
  2. Place bottom cake layer on a cake turntable or cake board and spread frosting to the top. Repeat until entire cake is assembled.
  3. Complete frosting the cake by adding one thin layer all over and placing cake into the refrigerator for 10 minutes. Then add the final layer of frosting.
  4. Add the How to Train Your Dragon printables into the cake as shown for the dragon.

*This recipe is for 1 cake. Double the cake recipe to make two cakes.

If you prefer to use a cake mix: Use 2 cake mix boxes for one three layer cake.

IMPORTANT: When paper touches the buttercream frosting, it can make the paper greasy. When inserting your printables into the cake, try leaving a gap between the paper and the cake if possible. I suggest not adding the printables until right before you are ready to display or serve the cake.

  1. Gently open and remove the filling from a handful of Mini OREO cookies with a knife.
  2. Melt white candy melts in the microwave for 30 seconds and stir. Repeat until candy is smooth and creamy.
  3. Make Minnie’s ears by using the melted white candy as the glue to stick the mini cookies inside of the larger cookies. Let candy dry before decorating.
  4. In a small glass bowl, melt pink candy in the microwave for 30 seconds and stir. Repeat until candy is smooth and creamy.
  5. Dip one half of a cookie into the melted candy, gently shake cookie to smooth any rough edges and sprinkle with red, pink and white nonpareils.
  6. Dip the tip of a lollipop stick into the melted candy, then gently hold it on the bottom of the cookie. You don’t need to press it into the cookie as it might break.
  7. Hold stick to the cookie until a bond is made, then place on a piece of wax paper to cool and harden.
  8. Add Minnie’s bow by placing a small bit of melted candy on two jumbo candy hearts. Gently stick them to the top of the cookie to form a bow.
  9. If you can find the edible polka dot heart wafers by Wilton, add them to the top of the hearts buy using melted candy as glue. This step is optional.
  10. Print the Valentine’s Day tags, trim and punch a hole in the top and bottom. After the candy has completely hardened on the cookies, slide the tag onto the lollipop stick. Wrap as gifts or display on your party table.

My son loves chocolate, so for his 16th birthday cake I wanted to go all out with his favorite things. Buying a cake from our local bakery was the quickest thing I could do, but it wasn’t that exciting looking. I need it to be extra fun and special. That’s when I went looking around for some chocolate treats that would be perfect for decorating his cake.

You only turn 16 once and I think the cake turned out super cute. It definitely became the ultimate chocolate birthday cake!

Sponsored by DreamWorks Animation Television

With kids out of school for the holidays, this is the perfect time to get crafty at home! Today’s craft idea for these easy glow in the dark Galaxy Jars was inspired by Tales of Arcadis: 3Below, a cute new animated series streaming now on Netflix. It’s perfect for the whole family to watch together over the holiday break!

From the director Guillermo del Toro and the team behind DreamWorks Trollhunters, 3Below is a hilarious tale of alien royalty who must escape intergalactic bounty hunters by blending in on a primitive junk heap known as Earth.

Make one or two of these Galaxy Jars, grab some popcorn and snuggle up for some out of this world family adventures!

Easy Galaxy Jars Craft

I thought glow in the dark Galaxy Jars would be fun to make and then light up while watching this new series! After we got to testing the galaxy jars, I came up with two different versions for you to choose from.

How to make Glow in the Dark Galaxy Jars. An easy DIY craft tutorial and party decor idea for kids by Living Locurto.

  • On the left is the No-Mess Galaxy Jar version with a printable galaxy backdrop from 3Below.
  • On the right is the slimy Ooey Gooey Galaxy Jar version that I know your kids will enjoy making. Just like Princess Aja’s alien dog, Luug, it’s a slobber mess, but of course super fun!

How to make Glow in the Dark Galaxy Jars

With only a few ingredients, these glowing Galaxy Jars are a piece of cake to make! Here are the directions for both versions that I showed in the photo above.

What you’ll need to make the Ooey Gooey Galaxy Jars:

Step 1

Remove the caps to the glue and squeeze some of each color onto a plate (plastic disposable is best). Use a plastic spoon to pick up some blue glue and rub it around the inside of a glass jar. Coat the jar well, but not too thick.

Next, spread some purple glue around, then add some pink in several places.

Galaxy Jars are an easy DIY craft tutorial and party decor idea for kids by Living Locurto.

Step 2

Place the jar into the microwave and set the timer to 40 seconds. The heat from the microwave will heat the glue making it crystalize on the glass. You might need to heat for 30 additional seconds if you don’t notice the glue drying.

CAUTION: The jar will be HOT. Use an oven mitt to remove the glass from the microwave.

Let the jar completely cool.

Add more glue if you want more color and repeat the heating process. Only do this a few times, overheating can cause the glue to burn and darken the glass.

Step 3

Once the jars have cooled, add a battery operated votive candle or glow stick and enjoy looking into the galaxy when it gets dark!

What you’ll need for a Christmas Tree Donut Wall:

  • 1 White Foam Board (20″ x 30″)
  • 4” Lollipop Sticks (You will need 8 sticks cut in half)
  • Yellow Scrapbook Paper
  • Red Scrapbook Paper
  • Pencil
  • Ruler or Measuring Tape

Step 1

Turn the foam board vertically and measure to find the center. The board will stand up tall when completed.

Step 2

Measure roughly 7” down from the center of the top of the board. This is where the top of the first donut will be placed.

How to make a Christmas Tree Donut Wall - Step 2. Easy Christmas Party Food Craft by Living Locurto

Step 3

Begin arranging the donuts in a “Christmas tree” shape on top of the foam board. Start with one donut in the top row, two in the second row, etc, until you end with five donuts in the bottom row.

How to make a Christmas Tree Donut Wall - Step 3. Easy Christmas Party Food Craft by Living Locurto

Step 4

Using a pencil, mark a spot inside the donuts’ holes right at the very top to mark where you will place the sticks from which they will hang. Remember, DO NOT put the mark in the middle, it must be at the top of the hole where the donut will rest on the stick.

How to make a Christmas Tree Donut Wall - Step 4. Easy Christmas Party Food Craft by Living Locurto

Step 5

Cut each 4” lollipop stick in half and press firmly into the foam board on top of each of your marked spots. The sticks should stay put inside the board, but if you want to insure they don’t fall out, you can hot glue them to the board. If you plan to use this donut wall only one time, I wouldn’t bother with glue! Skipping that step will save yourself some time.

Step 6

Cut a star from yellow scrapbook paper and then hot glue it to the board directly above the top donut.

Cut a 3”x3” square from red scrapbook paper and hot glue it to the board in the center of the bottom row of donuts.

The slime should soften after you knead it. The chocolate ends up being more like putty, so if it is too hard and crumbly, add it to a bowl with a tablespoon of peanut butter and heat in the microwave for 15-30 seconds. Stir and knead. Add cornstarch to prevent stickiness until you achieve desired texture. Store in the refrigerator in an airtight container. This recipe is actually really edible for up to 2 days after you make it.
