9 Things You Need To Do With Your Lady Friends {Like YESTERDAY}

Girls Night Out Ideas

This post is for all you mamas looking for some solid girls night out ideas, or those that just need a quick kick in the pants to make it all happen.

Listen, maybe you’re all ready good at these things. Taking all the time you need for yourself, getting out for some ME time, taking care of YOU. For those of us lost in the motherhood hustle, here are some of the best ways to spend time with your lady friends!

One of the key components — it’s time to start saying YES.

As moms, I think we’ve gotten used to saying NO all day long.  We end up saying NO to ourselves inordinately as well. Here’s your friendly reminder of things to SAY YES to.

Potluck

Do I sound like my mother? Who does a “potluck” anymore. Me and my friends. And it’s the best (especially if you have friends who can cook  . . . or friends who know where to buy the good foods that they can’t cook).  We do an annual “Friendsgiving”, birthday dinners, or random get togethers just because.

Dance The Night Away

For me, the opportunity might present itself like a rare eclipse — but when it does — YOU MUST DANCE! Don’t sit it out, hit the dance floor and request all of the best 80’s and 90’s songs to get your feet moving.

Will you wake up feeling like you are 120? Probably. After my most recent dancecapade in Whistler Canada, I woke up with sore knees, hips, neck and back. Ibuprofen was in order (and a trip to the spa was probably justified too).

Hit Up A Concert

I just reignited my concert going a couple of years ago and kicked things off with an epic Coldplay concert. I’d forgotten how amazing concerts are. They do something for the soul and there’s scientific proof it will make you live longer

Plan in advance for your favorite bands or simply decide to say YES next time someone has an extra ticket. My new philosophy on concerts is to just say YES.

Get Out Of Town

Ever been to Disneyland with your girlfriends? No kids? It’s life changing.

Whether it’s Disneyland, an epic road trip, a work trip turned weekend getaway or a jaunt to a hotel downtown with your gal pals to get away for just a night, some vacation time with your girl besties is just what the doctor ordered!

Eat All The Things

Let’s be honest, it’s easier to hit up all the best restaurants WHEN YOU ONLY HAVE TO PAY FOR YOURSELF. And really, we’re never going to drag our kids to those places. That foodie bucket list you’ve got should be shared {and executed promptly} with your besties.

Say Yes To Questionable Spa Treatments And Experiences

I mean, use your best judgement right? But some of the best {and funniest} spa experiences with friends have been the most random things we’ve done.

On a recent work trip turned girlfriend getaway we ended up in Jamaica at an incredible spa. They had a hydro treatment that required us to move through all sorts of different experiences including jumping in to an ice cold pool {screaming our guts out}.

That Chinese massage parlor on a random corner in Portland was the best spur of the moment decision I’ve ever made.

The weird float spa pods that I talked everyone into were magical.

That one time I talked my friend into doing some sort of colon cleanse because all of the other spa appointments were too booked was the most epic comedy recorded in history. It’s too messy to discus here, but let it be know that I will laugh until I cry every time she retells the story.

Take Up A Sport

Let’s be age and ability appropriate. You might still be ready to rock an indoor soccer team or maybe it’s a bowling league. Tennis or golf anyone? Swimming or yoga? Racquetball? There is something out there for EVERYONE and time making your body move is time well spent. It’s even more tolerable with friends.

Play Games

I mean, choose your speed. Your crew might be perfect for Bunko or a simple card game . . . OR Cards Against Humanity might be more your speed (only to be played when your children are 1,000 miles away from ear shot).  This game is rated R for Rad {and adult language and inappropriateness}.

A Tuesday Afternoon Movie

Yep. You’re right. The theatre will likely be filled with the iridescent swoops of the glowing grey hair of the retired community. And you. You should be there too.

Grab a babysitter, get your kids to school, take the afternoon off of work, grab your friends and PLAY HOOKIE! Catch a cheap movie and grab some good lunch. It’s amazing.

Melissa and Maya.

They are the FUNNEST combination to watch together on screen. Melissa McCarthy’s new movie “Life of the Party” hits theatres this weekend and there is plenty of role modeling for what good friends do for each other. Things like play raquetball together, represent each other in legal situations, throw the perfect one liners at your ex, and encouraging you to spread your wings and fly (right back to college).

Here’s the thing. I got super lucky and was able to attend the premier of Life of the Party. I got inches of make up applied to my face, curls in my hair, and hit the red carpet in Auburn Alabama with loads of college kids from Auburn University (Go War Eagles)!

Look up there! There’s Melissa McCarthy and Julie Bowen, with a bunch of other amazing bloggers and lady friends. Melissa told me she liked me dress, so I guess we’re pretty much best friends.

My only regret is that I didn’t have all of my lady friends with me. We would have died laughing together! Instead, I was dying laughing next to @FunnyAsianDude, one of the guys IN the movie — who was WONDERFUL but probably a little freaked out because I almost punched him several times as I was dying laughing (and clearly punch people when that happens to me).

I saved photos of all the action on our Instagram page @TodaysMama — just look at our highlighted stories and you’ll see “Life of the Party” click through and you’ll see shots from the red carpet, the stars, the after party, the whole thing! {I’ll try to embed the video here but Instagram is being feisty and it won’t let me download it!}

Life of the Party is definitely the next Tuesday afternoon movie or Friday night out with your ladies that you need to schedule ASAP. {And if you are catching this late, it’s a great movie to pair with your potluck}! No excuses, get out there and have a girls night!

Bonus! Check out this fun interview with Melissa and Maya over on the LA Times! I heart them.

How Movies Can Cultivate Character in Your Kids (and Ones That Do It Well)

By Caroline Knorr, Common Sense Media

Has your kid ever misbehaved like Alvin from the Chipmunks movies? Or mean-girled her friends like the Bratz dolls? Don’t feel bad. Kids pick up all kinds of things from movies. But they can just as easily absorb positive messages. The trick is finding movies that teach the stuff you want your kids to learn. And, if you know a little bit about how kids learn from movies, you can make sure they’ll get the right lessons.

Photo by Steven Libralon on Unsplash

Fortunately, you don’t have to look far for character-building movies. Plenty of popular picks have lessons such as gratitude, humility, and integrity embedded in their story lines. And if you’re concerned that self-absorption, immediate gratification, and lack of empathy seem to be the prevailing characteristics of today’s digital kids, these movies are the perfect solution. (Learn more about using media to promote social-emotional learning.)

It’s important to choose movies that impart lessons designed for your kid’s age and developmental stage. You can reinforce the movies’ ideas by talking about them, asking questions, and sharing your values. These tips can help you spot movies that help kids absorb character-building messages:

Little Kids (age 2–7)

  • Pick simple story lines. Little kids learn best from movies with one main idea that’s central to the plot and supported by the action.
  • Make it obvious. If it were in print, the lesson would be in bold, capitalized, and underlined three times. Little kids need it to be that blatant.
  • Look for human characters. Although animated movies rule the box office, little kids actually learn best when human characters demonstrate the lesson. Think of the 1960 Disney movie Pollyanna, whose lead character was so empathic that her name came to mean “someone who finds the good in everyone.”
  • Try: Dear Dumb DiaryThe Indian in the CupboardVeggieTales: Madame Blueberry

Big Kids (age 8–9)

  • Keep it simple. To learn lessons from movies, elementary school-age kids still need to see the basic cause-and-effect sequence of how a character’s motives are connected to actions and consequences.
  • Find the funny. Kids learn when they laugh. The challenge is finding movies that don’t mock the lesson you want them to learn. Some character traits, such as curiosity, can be dealt with humorously, as in the Curious George series.
  • Forget fables. While movies with an implied (not obviously stated) moral seem obvious to parents, they’re lost on kids (until about age 9).
  • Emphasize the positive. Look for mostly positive examples of the lesson rather than negative examples. If you want kids to learn courage, for example, they need to see attempts at courage and courageous acts being repeated and rewarded throughout the movie.
  • TryThe Tale of the Princess Kaguya, The NeverEnding StoryCharlie and the Chocolate Factory (2005)

Tweens and Teens (age 10 and older)

  • Look for relatable characters. Tweens and teens are more engaged when they can see themselves reflected on the screen. Cher, the main character in Clueless, for example, is far from perfect, which is why older kids can relate when she ultimately learns humility.
  • Seek out complexity. Tweens and teens can understand plots and subplots. As kids get older, they enjoy sorting through complex ideas to figure out what a movie is really saying.
  • Dismiss the obvious. Tweens and teens will reject a movie that’s clearly trying to teach them a lesson. They can understand, for example, a loner who learns the value of teamwork (such as Indiana Jones) or that perseverance takes a lot of failing.
  • TryMcFarland USAHe Named Me MalalaBridge of Spies

‘I Feel Pretty’ Movie Review

For those of you saying “I mean I hear it’s good and seems to have a solid message, but it’s Amy Schumer, would you take your daughter?”

This review is for you.

Here’s the deal — I’d say I have a moderate threshold for inappropriateness, but in years past I’ve had a mixed relationship with Amy Schumer. Sometimes she has me laughing out loud, sometimes she has me contorting my face and saying EW! Like when I was reading “The Girl With The Lower Back Tattoo” on a long flight and I’d literally make a disgusted face and then turn and look around the plane as if fellow passengers were reading over my shoulder. And then I’d be laughing again a few minutes later.

We’ve Netflixed a few Amy Schumer movies that we’ve ultimately turned off (and note to self, I was warned, they were rated R, I’ve got no excuse).

Having said that — I went into “I Feel Pretty” hoping it was great but expecting that the humor would go a little too far leaving me disappointed (and unable to share what was hopefully an inspiring message with my 14-year-old girl). I was wrong and happily surprised.

To be clear, the movie is PG-13 {you can check out the IMDB parents guide here}. There’s some language, drinking, and the parents guide calls out that the movie makes mention of the word “vagina”.  All things we’ve comfortably talked about at our house.

See More: Common Sense Media Review

The overall message shines, and this group {of mostly Mormon moms might I add}  give the movie 2 thumbs up and have gone back with daughters in tow. I’m taking my girl next week and excited for a solid girls night followed by some good conversations.

Here’s what the rest of our crew had to say about ‘I Feel Pretty’:

“My teenagers loved LOVED it! All of my teenage nieces and my daughters went on Friday. They asked for baguette (bagetti) with dinner last night. My daughter Abby loved the body positivity. She keeps talking about how nice it was to see Amy Schumer in a role that wasn’t vulgar.”

— Wendy

“I laughed out loud, a lot. It reminded me of the fun rom coms I grew up on!”

— Carina

“I thought it was really funny. I don’t always like Amy Schumer — but I laughed out loud many times. It has a great message and I can’t wait to take my teen!”

— Lindsey

“I laughed hard! A better version of a rom com!”

— Kalli

We weren’t the only ones in the theatre laughing, the whole place was cracking up. I might have even shed a tear a time or two.

Bottom line?  We could all learn a thing or two from “I Feel Pretty”. Time well spent!

{P.S. Check out her recent interview with Oprah on the Super Soul Podcast! It was fantastic!}

8 NEW Pixar Fest Foods at Disneyland You Can’t Miss!

Disneyland Resort’s first ever Pixar Fest brings the world of Pixar films to life in countless ways. But there’s only way to let your belly join in on the festivities–FOOD!! Sure Disneyland has rides and surreal sights to see, but you need to plan at least one day just to take in all the scrumptious food!  Disneyland Resort Pixar Fest offers fun and delicious eats and treats with a sweet Pixar theme. Pixar Fest arrived at Disneyland Resorts April 13, 2018 and will run for only a limited time. You won’t want to miss these creatively themed food and beverages available only until September 3, 2018.  Here’s our favorites from Pixar Fest (but trust me when I say there’s so much more!)

Fried Bologna Sandwich

Inspired by the film “Up”, you can find this yummy fried bologna sandwich on Main Street inside Disneyland, at the Carnation Cafe. (Even the President of Disneyland Resorts was surprised at just how yummy this was!)

“Coco” Churro

Inside Disneyland, walk your way over to Frontierland and enjoy a “Coco” inspired chocolate churro! This fried yummy goodness is rolled in rich chocolate powder, vanilla bean and salted cinnamon sugar served with spiced, Mexican chocolate dipping sauce.

“Toy Story” Root Beer Boot Float

You can be sure that no snakes are in this boot at the Golden Horseshoe Saloon in Disneyland.  Served in a souvenir Woody boot, you won’t want to miss checking the bottom for a “Toy Story” memory.

“Monsters, Inc.” Chilled Noodle Salad

Use the special sauce to activate these monster noodle colors! With mint, thai basil, shredded daikon and tofu you’ll be happy you stopped at the Lucky Fortune Cookery in Disney California Adventure Park for this cool salad.

Pixar Fest Celebration Cake

This vibrant Pixar Fest celebration cake can’t help but bring a bright smile to your face. Found in both parks, you can’t miss this gorgeous treat. If in Disneyland, head over to the Plaza Inn. If visiting Disney California Adventure, visit Boardwalk Pizza & Pasta, Paradise Garden Grill and Pacific Wharf Cafe.

“Toy Story” Alien Macaron

Need I say more? Your kids (or maybe you?!) will be bouncing these little aliens around the table. I’d pay you $5 if you can get through eating them without someone saying “THE CLAW!!”. These cuties will be found in Disneyland at the Alien Pizza Planet in Tomorrowland (along with quite a few other Pixar inspired food such as the Green Star Pesto Pasta and Cheeseburger Pizza).

Pixar Themed Cake Pops

Found throughout Disneyland Resort in any bakery or candy kitchen, you’ll be enamored by these adorable cake pops. You’ll want to be sure to stop in every bakery to find your favorite characters. We couldn’t get enough of Nemo and Lightning McQueen.
Disneyland Pixar Fest Cake Pops Nemo

“Cars” Habanero Meatball Cone

Drive over to the Cozy Cone Motel in Disney California Adventure Park for some spicy treats! Try this Habanero Meatball cone with turkey meatballs in a habanero derby sauce with a cheese crisp and spiral pasta “smoke stacks”.

While these are just a few of our favorites, both Disneyland Resort theme parks have endless Pixar themed food to help you enjoy this special time at Pixar Fest. For a more complete list of all the Pixar Foods, click here. You’ll definitely want to map out your favorites ahead of time. The food is so good, but you won’t be able to eat it all.  Or will you? Challenge accepted?  Share your favorite Disneyland foods by commenting below.

THIS Is The Only Bracket That Matters This March {And It’s Tearing Us Apart}

Did you know there is a 1 in 9.2 quintillion chance of filling out the perfect bracket?

Well I don’t want to brag—okay, I totally do—but you’re looking at it.

Okay, so the stat is actually about a perfect March Madness bracket, but, if anything, the Disney + Pixar challenge is a million times harder and probably far more damaging to human productivity and relationships. I know my husband got a step or seven closer to sleeping on the couch when we got down to brass tacks over several key matchups.

Take The Little Mermaid vs. The Lion King: Sure, Simba’s got sway in the realm of heart-warming family narrative (maniacal uncle aside), but how do you compete with a movie that has an entire song set to the scene of a twisted French chef chasing a beleaguered crab with a cleaver? I submit that you cannot.

Well, Up tried. Using a powerful lineup of heart-wrenching love story and avian absurdity. But when your competitor can double team you with oh-so-relatable underwater angst and music that you can never forget the words to, you don’t really stand a chance.

And just like that, Little Mermaid unquestionably takes the championship.

But for you crazies who dare to disagree, feel free to fill out your own brackets…just make sure you don’t share the results unless you’re ready to really reevaluate your friendships.

Girl Power Movie Night Giveaway

This post is in partnership with RLJ Entertainment.

Are you ready for an adventure?! How about an epic movie night with your older kiddos? Stocked with snacks and drinks for a small army and a GREAT movie.

I Kill Giants is a sci-fi adventure that features Barbara Thompson, a teen girl who is the only thing standing between terrible giants and the destruction of her small town.

Based on the wildly popular graphic novel by Joe Kelly and Ken Niimura, the movie was directed by Academy award-winner, Anders Walter and produced by Chris Columbus, the cinematic wizard behind Harry Potter—and it looks every bit as magical and astonishing!

This movie looks like an intense and touching story about bravery, trust, and love…and that seems like just what we could all use right now.

Packed with courageous girls, and our favorite warrior woman Zoe Saldana (you’ll remember her from Guardians of the Galaxy and Star Trek) this movie is sure to be a hit with your own batch of brave kiddos.

I Kill Giants is in select theaters and On Demand, find it on iTunes.

But remember that epic movie night I mentioned? We’re giving you a chance to win a Movie Night Prize Package that includes:

$100 Visa gift card for an I KILL GIANTS Movie Night!
Copy of the book.

We’ll pick one random winner from the comments below, on Monday April 2nd. To enter just leave a comment telling us how you’d spend your $100 Visa gift card—we’re looking for an epic snack spread, people.

Good Luck!

New Grinch Movie Starring Benedict Cumberbatch!

ILLUMINATION PRESENTS DR. SEUSS’ THE GRINCH – In Theaters November 9

Official Website | Facebook | Twitter | Instagram | #TheGrinch

For their eighth fully animated feature, Illumination and Universal Pictures present The Grinch, based on Dr. Seuss’ beloved holiday classic.  The Grinch tells the story of a cynical grump who goes on a mission to steal Christmas, only to have his heart changed by a young girl’s generous holiday spirit.  Funny, heartwarming and visually stunning, it’s a universal story about the spirit of Christmas and the indomitable power of optimism.

Academy Award® nominee Benedict Cumberbatch lends his voice to the infamous Grinch, who lives a solitary life inside a cave on Mt. Crumpet with only his loyal dog, Max, for company.  With a cave rigged with inventions and contraptions for his day-to-day needs, the Grinch only sees his neighbors in Who-ville when he runs out of food.

Each year at Christmas they disrupt his tranquil solitude with their increasingly bigger, brighter and louder celebrations.  When the Whos declare they are going to make Christmas three times bigger this year, the Grinch realizes there is only one way for him to gain some peace and quiet: he must steal Christmas.  To do so, he decides he will pose as Santa Claus on Christmas Eve, even going so far as to trap a lackadaisical misfit reindeer to pull his sleigh.

Meanwhile, down in Who-ville, Cindy-Lou Who—a young girl overflowing with holiday cheer—plots with her gang of friends to trap Santa Claus as he makes his Christmas Eve rounds so that she can thank him for help for her overworked single mother.  As Christmas approaches, however, her good-natured scheme threatens to collide with the Grinch’s more nefarious one.  Will Cindy-Lou achieve her goal of finally meeting Santa Claus?  Will the Grinch succeed in silencing the Whos’ holiday cheer once and for all?

Find out, Christmas season 2018.
