About The Powerpuff Girls!

If you don’t remember the Cartoon Network’s original series, let me tell you a little about it. The Powerpuff Girls centers around three superheroes, Blossom, Bubbles, and Buttercup, whose missions in life alternate between going to school, fighting crime, winning at hopscotch and saving the world before bedtime.

Blossom is the confident and courageous leader of The Powerpuff Girls.

Bubbles is the second of The Powerpuff Girls known as “The Joy and the Laughter.”

I had so much fun making sandwiches from The Powerpuff Girls! Here’s how I did it…

What you’ll need to Make The Powerpuff Girls Sandwiches:

  • A large round cookie cutter (I used a thermos – it worked just as well as a cookie cutter)
  • bottle caps for cutting small candy into circles
  • Salt-Water Taffy
  • Mini OREO Cookies
  • Provolone Cheese (Bubble’s hair)
  • Cheddar Cheese (Blossom’s hair)
  • Sushi Sheets (Buttercup’s hair)
  • Olives (mouth)
  • Strawberries
  • 1 Red Fruit Roll-Up
  • wax paper

The main challenge I faced when making The Powerpuff Girls sandwiches, was how to come up with a way to make their eyes. I was so happy with the way the taffy worked! I got a bag of taffy at my grocery store which had all of the colors I needed.

How to make eyes:

  1. Scrape the white filling out of a mini OREO.
  2. Find a white piece of taffy and roll it out thin with a rolling pin.
  3. Cut out a circle shape with a bottle cap. My taffy had red or black taffy in the white ones, but I just cut around the color.
  4. Do the same with a colorful piece of candy for the girl’s eye color. You can use a red fruit roll-up for the red eye.
  5. Now take a small piece of white taffy, roll it into a ball and flatten it out for the eyeball. Gently lay it on the Oreo wafer. Add some water on the back for it to stick.
  6. Add the OREO to the colorful round candy shape.
  7. Then roll out the white shape a little more with your rolling pin to make it larger than the colorful circle. Then add the rest of the eye onto the white circle. Set it aside on wax paper while you make the other eye.

Once you have the eyes finished, cut your bread into a circle, make your sandwich and add the eyes to the top.

Decorate the rest of the face with cheese or sushi sheets for the hair, then attach half of an olive for the mouth with a bit of cream cheese.

I used strawberries for Blossom’s bunny ears.

The Powerpuff Girls turned out super cute! This would make any little girl’s day at school.

Girl Power rules! Be sure to check out The Powerpuff Girls trailer below and stream on Hulu anytime!

Spicy Garlic Sausage Sliders

We now take a break from my typical fiesta of baked goods and chocolate to bring you, what my husband admiringly declared, “DUDE FOOD.”

Yes, these Spicy Garlic Sausage Sliders are going to be the hero of my big game buffet come this Sunday, but don’t for one second think that my lady-like tastebuds weren’t SIIIINGING when I tasted this:

These sausage sliders are a piece of cake to prep in advance and then warm up in oven when you’re ready to serve. I like things to be easy—and super tasty—so building this recipe around Johnsonville Bratwurst Sausages brought a ton of flavor so that I could add some of our other favorite flavor categories.

Flavor categories such as…cheesy, garlicy, and juuuuust spicy enough.

Need more big game recipe inspiration using your favorite Johnsonville sausage? Then check out Johnsonville’s new online reality show, The Sausage Dome — a fun cooking competition where sausage loving social celebs and enthusiasts present their sausage-based Big Game recipes to a panel of six Johnsonville employee members called The Sausage Six.

Now…are you ready to see how to create a sausage slider that will bring your big game party guests to their feet (cheering and praising your kitchen ninja skills?)

Let’s do this…

SPICY GARLIC SAUSAGE SLIDERS

Meet your team…

Now, you can use any dinner roll, but I can’t peer pressure you enough into getting your hands on some pretzel rolls. They crisp up so wonderfully in the oven and are chewy and sturdy enough to handle the flavor fiesta that’s coming for you…

Johnsonville Brats Original Bratwurst. RUN DO NOT WALK. You can grill these or cook them in a frying pan. I was pretty set on grilling, but then I stepped outside into the Utah winter and thought. NOPE. NOPE. NOPE.

While you’re cooking your brats, you can also sauté your peppers in a separate frying pan.

When they are soft and sweet, set them aside.

Grab a pyrex baking dish and set to work slicing your pretzel buns and slathering them with spicy mustard. We used a horseradish variety and think my husband may have finished off the jar with a spoon.

Assemble the sliders as follows, from the bottom up:
-mustard
-sliced sausage (2-3 slices per slider)
-sauted peppers
-swiss cheese
-top bun

Prepare butter sauce by melting butter and combining with crushed garlic and red pepper flakes. Once you’ve assembled all of the sandwiches, give that butter sauce one last stir and pour it over each sandwich. Try not to drool on the sandwiches…

Place in a 375 degree oven for 10 minutes until the cheese is melted and the butter sauce is nice and bubbly. LIKE THIS. (Warning: your kitchen will smell like buttery garlicy HEAVEN.)

Serve and enjoy!

  • Johnsonville Brats Original Bratwurst
  • Pretzel Buns (or dinner rolls)
  • Swiss Cheese (one slice per slider)
  • Red Bell Pepper
  • Green Bell Pepper
  • Spicy Mustard
  • Butter – 5 Tablespoons
  • Crushed Garlic – 2 teaspoons
  • Red Pepper Flakes – 1 teaspoon
  • Salt + Pepper – to taste
  • Oil – 1-2 Tablespoons (I used avocado oil)

Directions:

  1. Cook Johnsonville Brats according to package directions (either on the grill or in a frying pan) and set aside. Once cool to the touch, slice diagonally to get 4-5 slice per brat.
  2. Slice and sauté bell peppers in oil and season with salt and pepper to taste. Set aside.
  3. Prepare butter sauce by melting butter and combining with crushed garlic and red pepper flakes. Set aside.
  4. Slice buns and place in a 9×13 pyrex baking dish.
  5. Assemble the sliders as follows, from the bottom up:
    -mustard
-sliced sausage (2-3 slices per slider)
    -sautéed peppers
    -swiss cheese
    -top bun
(If you’re making these ahead, stop here and cover the sliders, and refrigerate.)
  6. Once you’ve assembled all of the sandwiches, give that butter sauce one last stir and pour it over each sandwich.
  7. Place in a 375 degree oven for 10 minutes (15 if refrigerated) until the cheese is melted and the butter sauce is nice and bubbly.
  8. Serve and enjoy!

Slow Cooker BBQ Chicken Pineapple Bacon Sandwiches

It’s taken me awhile to get the hang of using my slow cooker. It wasn’t until I embraced the idea of winging it a few years ago and starting tossing stuff in what is now my 2nd most beloved kitchen appliance (coffee pot lives forever in first place) that I got really good at rocking my slow cooker.

And never is my slow cooker more welcome on my kitchen counter than in the heat of the summer, when I’d much rather spend my days outside and the thought of standing over a warm stove is wildly unwelcome.

But my summer slow cooker recipes are a far cry from my cold weather favorites…I just can’t seem to get psyched for pot roast or soup after a day at the pool.

But a delicious sandwich matched with fresh summer fruit and salty chips?

SIGN ME UP.

This recipe was inspired by a magical sandwich that my husband whipped up for a us a few years ago on a Sunday evening, using a bunch of leftovers from previous meals. Bacon from breakfast, chicken from dinner the night before, pineapple and cheese from the fridge. We tossed it all together and then gaped at each other when we took the first bites. The combo was straight-up delicious.

So good that we no longer wait for the magical leftover combo to present itself. This sandwich has become a meal plan star.

Add additional cooking liquid if you prefer a thinner sauce for your sandwich, or if you’ll be letting the slow cooker remain on the “warm” until you’re ready for dinner.

When you are ready to serve, add ½ cup pineapple tidbits to the slow cooker.

This was my first time using the KC Masterpiece BBQ Sauce Mix & Dry Rub, and it won’t be the last. The sauce was delicious and as a perpetual recipe tweaker, I love that I can adjust the flavor by adding different liquids to the mix, and control the thickness of the sauce or marinade. I’m looking forward to trying out the Spicy Habanero and Sweet Honey varieties verrrrry soon.
