Cute & Easy Crawfish Cakes! Fun Food Idea for a Crawfish Boil by Amy Locurto. LivingLocurto.com

Cute Crawfish Boil Cakes

I had a ton of fun at a Crawfish Boil party this weekend! As you can see, I also had fun making cute crawfish cakes too!

If you’re not from the south, or have friends from Louisiana, then you have probably never been to a crawfish boil. Let me tell you, it’s so much fun when the host dumps a giant pot of steaming hot and spicy crawfish, potatoes and corn onto a long table covered with paper. Then it’s every man, woman and child for themselves!!

This was my husband’s first boil. It was obvious when he got his leg hair singed off after walking by the cooking pots! Luckily he just lost leg hair and not skin. Then I had to giggle when he was surprised that people ate off of the table. Once someone showed him how to get the meat out of the tail, he really liked it and jumped right into the fun. My kids, not so much! ha!

I kept hearing screams from kids who were playing with the live ones and getting pinched. Who knew a crawfish boil was so dangerous?

Cute Dessert Idea

I love making animals out of cake. Thanks for giving me some great ideas for desserts over on Facebook! Many of you suggested key lime pie or lemon bars as they are desserts that compliment fish.

Then someone suggested cute crab cupcakes made with red icing and candy eyeballs. Those cupcakes inspired me to make these funny crawfish cakes!

How to Make Crawfish Boil Cakes

Since crawfish are more long than round, a cupcake wouldn’t work. I was going to bake brownies and cut them into rectangles. Then I lost track of time and realized I only had about an hour before the party began and I had not even gone food shopping yet! No time to bake anything. So I went to the store in search of ready-made brownies or a cake I could cut up.

Pre-made lady fingers were on sale, so I bought a few packages and figured I could make a crawfish with them. I had no idea if they would work or not. In about 20 minutes I had a huge platter full of funny crawfish cakes! They turned out so cute… everyone loved them!

These cute cakes are a fast and easy party dessert for a crawfish boil!

Cute & Easy Crawfish Cakes! Fun Food Idea for a Crawfish Boil by Amy Locurto. LivingLocurto.com

What you will need:

  • 2 packages of ladyfingers or you could bake brownies or a cake from scratch and cut into rectangles.
  • Candy Eyeballs
  • Twizzlers
  • Red Cake Frosting
  • Scissors

How to make crawfish cakes:

  1. Cut Twizzlers to look like pinching claws. Mine were about 2″ long, I cut into one end and trimmed the edges at an angle.
  2. Put some icing on a lady finger and stick the licorice into the frosting. Add more icing on top of the licorice and cake.
  3. Add another lady finger on top of the frosting to make a sandwich.
  4. Add more frosting to the top and attach two candy eyeballs.

That’s it and so easy!! I hope you have fun making these crawfish cakes.

Savory Turkey Cranberry Apple Baked Brie Braid

With the holidays right around the corner, I’m happy to share this delicious and easy Savory Turkey Cranberry Apple Baked Brie Braid recipe!

Just imagine biting into Thanksgiving dinner all at once. That’s what this recipe tastes like! Plus, I’ve been dying to share my amazing experience of visiting a turkey farm for the first time.

This easy savory braided turkey dish is like taking a bite of Thanksgiving! A great family dinner recipe or holiday party appetizer anytime of the year. LivingLocurto.com

It all started when Honeysuckle White Turkey invited me to learn more about them by visiting a local turkey farm here in Texas. Have you ever been to a turkey farm? I’m going to guess… no. I’m the same, so of course I was interested.

I joined two other food bloggers in Austin where we each got paired with different turkey farmers, then based on the experience of our visit, created a recipe to celebrate an early Thanksgiving dinner with our farmers.

Ken and Dana from Sedberry Farm were the farmers I got to visit for the day. They are the sweetest couple who take such great pride in their farm! I love the fact that Honeysuckle White works with over 700 independent farmers and all turkeys are raised without growth-promoting antibiotics. This is very important as we all want to feed our family the best quality foods!

Honeysuckle White Turkey Farmers - Ken and Dana

I was so impressed with the way the entire family helps out on the farm! Their young son even has chores. What’s fun is they haven’t always been farmers. Dana started out as a registered nurse and Ken was a software engineer. Now they’re applying those skills to raising turkeys with care.

While I was at the turkey farm, a production crew was filming my visit. It was a full day of shooting at the farm. Here’s some behind the scene photos. (Scroll down to see the beautiful video they created!)

The next day, we had a special event planned at a beautiful location for our dinner with the farmers. Can you believe this gorgeous place? WOW! I was so excited to meet the other turkey farmers and get to enjoy this setting for dinner.

Beautiful Fall Table Decorations

I couldn’t stop taking photos. Can you blame me?

Beautiful Fall Table Decorations and Autumn Flowers

After shopping for our recipe ingredients we headed into the kitchen to start cooking. Well, cooking and filming. A LOT of filming! I realize now that it takes about 3 extra hours to cook what normally takes 40 minutes when you have a huge film crew in the kitchen with you.

I got to know everyone very well in all of that time. A little too well I think. Ha! It was fun to cook a turkey dinner along side my new blog friends!

My dish was created for my farmer Dana as this will be the first Thanksgiving she will host in her home. I figured she and Ken probably had a lot of turkey, so she could make a quick and easy appetizer for her family that tastes like a bite of Thanksgiving all rolled into one.

I’ve got the entire ingredients and directions that you can print below, but here is quick run down of the Savory Turkey Cranberry Apple Baked Brie Braid recipe. It’s SO GOOD!

First, I spiced up some ground turkey meat with chipolte spices, garlic, fresh rosemary, thyme and bacon crumbles. Added onto a sheet of puff pastry, then topped with brie and my homemade fast and easy cranberry apple sauce.

Then sliced the puff pastry to begin the braid.

Start by folding the bottom and the top over the turkey mixture, then criss cross the pieces to look like a braid. Tuck under any extra pieces. Add an egg wash over the top before baking.

No matter how you braid this dish, you CAN NOT mess it up. Look at how pretty it turns out!

After a long day of cooking, we got changed and ready to meet all of the turkey farmers for dinner.

I’m so happy that I caught my new blog friends, Yvette and Tanya’s personalities in this photo. Not only did I get to meet some amazing turkey farmers, but also inspiring bloggers!

Isn’t this a gorgeous Thanksgiving dinner table?

I spy my turkey recipe!

What’s so funny is while we were waiting to eat, Dana kept asking which blogger made my dish because it looked so good. When I told her I made it for her, she was so excited!

What a special day! I’m so thankful to have met such wonderful farmers who are the heart of our country.
